Interesting wind chart Brian.

Midday sat pic shows the Squall line out to sea has really weakened out but a freash line of cb has blown up from top of Northland to Auckland. :)

Must be a major snow dump inland - both Porter's and Arthur's Passes are closed. Steady rain and only about 6C in Chch. The wind has been freshening at times, but not yet strong.
Strongest winds for Canty look likely around dawn Monday with a SSW direction, not so different to the October 2001 storm
I think you're meaning October 2000. As much as this weather system is powerful, I doubt we'll get anything near as bad as the 2000 storm, when there was about 24 hours of very heavy rain and (at least) storm force winds on Banks Peninsula, conditions being only a little less savage in Chch. MetService is predicting southerlies to reach gale on the Kaikoura Coast for a time early tomorrow, before the system moves out to the east. I think the main feature of this storm will be the cold, and significant (probably low-level) snow inland. Lamb losses could be high.

And so I ask, will there be any chance of a thunderstorm round Canterbury during this cold outbreak?

Raining steadily where I am in Southshore, not hard though, a bit windy also, cold!

Cheers

As about much chance of the sun shining here in Christchurch today with the temperature suddenly rising up to 23C with it doing so. Tuesday looks more hopeful, Aaron.
The moment it is 6C with 7mm of rain here since 9am this morning.
A light E to Se blowing.

I wonder if it gets even lower - maybe you'll get some in Ashburton, Deano. MetService must've been aware of this snow on the plains - it has lowered the forecast snow level to 200 metres for Canterbury. Probably already snowing on higher parts of Banks Peninsula as well (may even the fall on the Port Hills tonight if it gets colder - just over 5C now in Chch). I spoke to my parents earlier this afternoon, and they said it's been raining steadily, though not heavily, out near Akaroa, without much wind so far.

Yes Ben you are right, it was 2000, not 2001. Actually it was only about 12 hours of heavy rain, one of the features which made that event even more remarkable. I hope you are right about it being not anything near as bad, probably it wont be, but perhaps we should say these winds look like being the strongest SW'ers since that storm.

12 hours of heavy rain in Chch (heavier rain in east and south of city during that storm), but the storm lasted longer out on the peninsula - my parents told me that it was still raining heavily out near Akaroa on the evening of the 12th, long after it had eased in Chch. It was the combination of high winds and torrential rain that caused so much damage.

We are up to 50mm rain here now, still falling heavily, 6 degrees, winds still easterly but decreasing, now 10-15 knots. Barometer has fallen steeply in the last 4 hours.

I guess we just got part of the same squall line - there was a wall of white approaching from the valley, looked like hail almost, but was very heavy rain and very strong wind. Some thunder as well, but can't make out any features.

Cheers,

from there, select the area to enlarge (use the top picture),
e.g
http://manati.wwb.noaa.gov/dataimages21 ... MBas70.png
and then the black wind barbs indicate rain
unfortunatley the way the "orange is peeled" means there are gaps with these polar orbiting satellites!
