The sun is managing to break through here time to time to reveal Cu cloud tops, its stopped raining (2:00pm) but I imagine it will still be on and off as the day progresses. My rain guage shows about 45mm so far for this event, perhaps if it is lowish looking to other parts of Cantab, I guess it's because of the rain shadow effect of Banks Peninsula. Still a good dump none the less. ;)

just got my phone connection back agian.....over head phone line snapped.....

power was going off and on all the time last night....

gusts to 57 knots recorded (which we had power) and averaging as high as 47 knots at times.
squalls to 55 knots here around 9am this morning
wind not as strong now

the sound in the pine trees was a crashing sound all last night.,..didnt get much sleep!

great photo pete!

i took some photos down at the coast today, where there is heaps of foam becuase of the large breakers (and because they extend for what looks like 3 km offshore!

A good dumping of snow on Banks Peninsula today, as well as inland Canterbury. Snow lying thickly above about 500 metres, plus a light dusting as low as about 350 metres at Hilltop. I saw a few sleet showers at lower levels this morning (though only rain in Chch). I couldn't see any snow on the Port Hills, but the tops were covered in cloud. Frequent showers have persisted around Akaroa until about midafternoon, but sunny intervals are now increasing. Surprisingly, the wind hasn't picked up - only freshening on occcasions.[/quote]

51mm all up from this event.
Rain and snow flakes as I drove to work early this morning.
Clearing to a crisp night now.
Methven had 20 cm of snow,Mt Somers 30 cm.

The "sheet like showers" associated with a sou' westerly have started and looks awful outside now :(

Fine and clear now in ChCh although a tad cold at 2C now 10pm
(Like yesterday, got the fire going, lovely and warm here).
Michael, you should do the same thing if it's ugly outside with those cold SW winds you get up there. Had a great day indoors, did lots of housework and spring cleaning!
Anyway I got 45.1mm for the event here.

6:23am to be exact, hehe. I woke up to a shaking sensation but it only went on for a few more seconds after I got up, I slept through it's beginnings. Turned on the radio and it was 40 or 30 km NE of Chch or was it that it's epecenter was 30 or 40 km deep? Hmm??? But it measured 4.9 on the ripter (spelling?) scale.

It is Ritcher named after the fellow who invented the scale.
As this is a weather discussion forum, not an earthquake forum, I won't go into details on who this Ritcher fellow was and pass on any comments about this morning's earthquake which measured 4.9 on the Richter scale and was centrered about 40kms north of ChCh at a depth of 30kms which is about as far as Rangiora is from ChCh !!!

Well, anyway,this was a good topic and thanks to the contributers who supplied comments.

I don't think this topic has such a big billing since the Ken ring days on the old forum !!!!!?!?!
