A good rule of thumb for good picture composition is to have the main focal point located about a third of the way into the picture from the side and about one third from the top or bottom, works well most times.

eg. Hope you dont mind me Stormchaser doing this crop

Hi, I'm new to this forum.
Before I start posting hugh images, I better ask on the size limits.
Can anyone tell me what the size limit is?

Thanks,
Frits.

Welcome to the forum, Frits.

Current size limits are 160kB for JPG and PNG, 80kB for GIF. I'd generally recommend no larger than 800x600. I'll also post this info in a sticky topic to make it more obvious.

I made this night shot late last year.
Over the estuary you see the place where I work. It's NZSteel.

And this photo is roughly from the same location but, obviously 8) , daytime.
The morning fog had just lifted and the resulting view was stunning.

I could have taken that pic. You know, if I'd had the time. And the camera. And some talent... :(

Talking about night shots, this one might qualify.
I'd bought a new lens for my camera and that same day we had this beautifull full moon. Had to take a shot.

The CB photos were taken from Racecourse Road facing East.

When visiting my homepage at http://simple-pages.homeunix.net/ be prepared to hang around for a bit when viewing the bigger images. My server uplink speed is only 256kbits/s.
Although it's twice the speed Telecom is offering at the moment, 256kbits/s is still very slow.

I guess it depends on your budget and likely uses. This is a good site for lens tests for Canon and Sigma:

http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html

A lens can be a better long-term investment than the DSLR body - many lenses originally made for film cameras up to 20 years ago still work on the latest digital bodies !

So I'd avoid the EF-S lenses which will only work on the APS-sized sensor cameras.

As you can see on my web pages, I'm using a Canon 300D (Rebel).
I have two lenses, the standard EFS 18-55 that came with the camera and a Tamron 28-300mm lens. The Tamron lens is somewhat heavy with it's glass lenses.
I have to say that both lenses are very good.

Oops thought you had a 350d! Which is what I have. I have actually looked at the Tamron lens range and have been quite impressed, also very good reviews on the internet that helps. But im tending towards a sigma, just a matter of which one.

Ive got about 1k tops to spend.

Both Tamron and Sigma are very high quality lenses.
Bottom line is going to be thr price, I would think.

Well after many late nights looking at reviews etc I think Im going to go for the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 USM L

http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses ... /index.htm

Will mostly be using it for weather, thoughts??

It's "L glass" so that will be a nice lens. The wide angle will be good for weather photography.

Worth getting a quality multi-coated UV filter to protect the front element e.g. Heliopan SH-PMC or B+W MRC.

It's always nice to see the weather playing ball when you want to take night shots over the water.
A very nice shot indeed.
