Deano,
I hope you don't mind, I posted your photo of the Methven snow on the Aussie Mailing List. There has been a bit of snow falling in Victoria as well.
I felt I should let them know we are getting snow as well.

Graders from Ashburton are heading inland, things are starting to get serious up there.

Deano, how quickly did the snow turn to rain as drove back to Ashburton? Your last photo shows snow settling at about 180 metres, while Ashburton is at about 100 metres.

Yeah Tich, within 3 km of the photo taken of my car with heavy snow flakes it had turned to rain mixed with sleet.
On my latest drive, the snow level has risen back up to around 300 metres about 6.30.
Rain is heaviest it has been all day now, temp 5.0 degrees,It is strange like you say we are warmer than Ch Ch city.

Inland Canterbury is a great place for observing snow storms. Places like Methven seem to get the odd good snow dump in winter.

That photo looks cool!

Sort of a scene where you then wonder back into your snug and warm log cabin and sit on a rug infront of your open fireplace as you look at the snow building up on the window sills, ahh that would be good!

Cheers

I was just sent this picture, supposedly of Hurricane Isabel at sea, but whenever it was, I know you folks will find it interesting.

Hi Tony,

I've seen this one do the rounds quite frequently, usually cited as being the current hurricane/cyclone/Labour Government or other severe condition that is the Buzz-word of the week :)

Popularly accepted to be just a gust front (note low tops to clouds, calm seas etc...)

Still a great sequence of shots which make it onto my desktop regularly.
If you can get the full set of shots, they make fascinating viewing...but not of a hurricane.

...And I got caught too, when I first saw them LOL.

I did wonder. I mean, its so obviously a CB squall that I assumed it might have been tied up with the hurricane even though its clearly not "a hurricane" itself. What the heck, its a nice picture. Well, for us folks it is. The guys on the ship might not have been so thrilled :)
