gidday guys tornado man here im new to this forum (btw) just thinking ok cold snap we have just had, gud signs of things to come. looks like a gud week ahead nice cold crisp days with lots of frosts till wensday at this stage.

Cant belive frosts for Nth Island was top story on the TV one news tonight!!

Another slow/no news day in little ol' backwater NZ...

Not real frosts,tomorrow be the coldest probably get down to 2 or 3 and afterwoods as the wind picks up there be no frosts unless the high "comes down"

Wimps....mate you want to see the locals up here,coldest morning of the year here today,15 degrees,jackets,mittens and all came out.

Same here in Sydney-scarfs, jackets with hoods, umbrellas, gloves. I start wearing them when the temp drops below 15 deg C . 10 deg C to us Sydney folk is like hell frozen over !

And I just went to the servo in a teeshirt at -1.4

Here in suburban Auckland the air temp in my screen dropped to around 2C this morning. Some breeze kept it up to around 3.5C most of the night but on anything insulated from below, including part of the roof, theres a good coating of ice.. just a trace of frost on the grass though.
Beautiful crisp clear calm winter morning here

Light ground frost here in Tawa this morning.
All that moisture that's been lurking round over the last few days made the grass lightly crispy.
Temperature got down to +0.2 and the bird bath froze over.
The birds ordered up a pot of warm water so that they could have a spa to start their working week....

Frosty nights for the rest of the week, but fine, anticyclonic weather for a change. (though smoggy nights in Chch)

Hey Tich, have any of Christchurch's anti-smog measures had any impact on the air quality?

Back to the winter we all know and love 100% SW gloom cold,may be lucky if we gt 10c today

City temp sitting on 1.9c at 9.45am, still freezing at 9am!

Only Waiouru was colder at 9am.

You'll probably have to ask the experts. The anti-smog measures haven't been around for long.

But if you let in the daytime readings as well and considered windchill, things would straighten up well. I notice that when you look at various lighthouse AWSs, for example, they may have a nominally higher mean temp than nearby sheltered locations on the land because of much higher night readings more than offsetting day readings - but once the windspeeds get looked at, things change.

I agree with that, but not the Northland bit.. anywhere south of the Bombay's, yes, most likely

Why do these clouds always appear in daytime so its a lose-lose situation after a clear night

All we can see here at night is Orion,the moon,crux and scorpius and a few bright stars and planets

You'd be amazed how much worthwhile astronomy you can do with a decent telescope and (CCD) camera from a city. As far as astronomy goes, Auckland's biggest problem is not the light pollution, it's the weather.
