Nah, Not much here at all, no hail or sleet. Its very cold though just sort of drizzle..
I very dounbt those claims.

Very dark outside temp dropping but needs to go below 1C then we could be in for a few flurries of snow or more come night.

Snowline rose by about 100m on Banks Peninsula as rain ceased around midday. But wet weather returned midafternoon. Sleet at Hilltop, plus a dusting of snow on the higher peaks of the southern Port Hills (500m+) as I came back into Chch around 5pm.[/quote]

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING.
ISSUED BY MetService AT 3:27 pm 18-Jun-2006

HEAVY SNOW FOR INLAND NORTH CANTERBURY AND KAIKOURA COAST - WARNING
FOR SOUTHLAND LIFTED

MetService is warning of a burst of heavy snow in Canterbury north of
the Rakaia and about the Kaikouras in the latter part of today (
Sunday). Cold southerlies are strengthening, and rain is spreading
into Canterbury. This is likely to turn to snow above about 300
metres in the hills from the Rakaia River northwards to the Kaikoura
Coast. 10 to 15cm may accumulate in this area between about 4pm and
11pm Sunday. After that, light snow showers should gradually tail off
during the night.

The warning for Southland is now lifted.

Just came back in from West Melton and not a really exciting day weather-wize :(
Cold rain falling from a wintry looking sky especially from mid-afternoon.
Here's a photo I took of today's events.

Does anyone have an opinion on the accuweather.com site? My friend e-mailed me this afternoon to say that they have a pretty full on forecast for Wednesday / Thursday this week as well - with an alert for more heavy snow. http://wwwa.accuweather.com/world-forec ... |&metric=1 48cm? surely this is pretty impossible?

Not impossible, but definitely improbable. Then again, I've been wrong before! ;)

Its a computer genrated forecast. As such its only slightly more reliable as a weather prediction than Gary's bunions. (or onions for that matter). :D

As for the weather in Canterbury later in the week, it looks very wet and cold. Just a bit too soon to feel confident about snow levels for then I think, but if I was above 500m I would be worried, and if I was below 500m (which I am) I would be keeping a close watch on each model run (or Fencepost.com).

Family in "sunny" Gisborne report snow sitting on the Whareratas and high hills near Matawai earlier today.
No detail as to depth or how low it sits.

One very cold sharp shower of snow earlier but well gone now. It is in fact a balmy 4deg so I suspect thats all we will see.

Hmmm - well a scientific and statistical response would be ... Now and then ;)
Matawai is a long way inland above the beginning of the Waioeka Gorge road to the BOP. It can be cold, and gets winter snow reasonably often. Snow on the Whareratas is less common.

They were surprised to see snow this early in the winter.

When I lived there, snow on the Whareratas was an event and synonomous with losing our TV signal - but that was when the dinosaurs were young. :?

I believe Matawai is about 500m asl, with nearby hills up to about 900 or 1000m. I don't think it was a full-on southerly yesterday and last night - must've been that trough crossing the North Island. I wouldn't be surprised if there has also been snow on higher hills of the volcanic plateau lately, with temperatures of 4C in Taupo and 5C in Rotorua late yesterday, both having received recent rain. I saw a photo on Trademe forum taken this morning, showing a thick coating on Mt Pihanga (near Turangi) down to I guess about 800 or 900m.

I see the roads on the western side of Ruapehu are now closed by snow, not just the Desert Road, so 2nd burst of cold stormy weather must've arrived.

I think that there is NOT going to be anymore severe weather as surface barometer pressures are on the rise.
...but in saying that, stationary anticyclone pressures will rise to the west of us which will enhance cold, below temperatures for the time of year, for the rest of the coming week and possibly into next week as well :)
It will be more finer than wet outbreaks. :)

Good call on the height. As you leave Matawai and hurtle down Trafford's Hill down to the Waioeka Gorge a sign flashes past - in the old days I'm sure it said "Trafford's Hill, 1480 feet" but then dinosaurs don't have good memories. We were too busy looking down the steep slopes and ducking the diesel fumes of upward trucks to pay too much attention.

I should've paid more attention in recent years to the metric measurement to see how high it was - too busy jaw-boning, I guess. :)
