Awesome! What's the marking just to the upper right of dead-center, near the large river? A sort of cross-hatch pattern. Is it real (forestry say) or a transmission artifact?

It's definitely not as severe as 1992.
And I wouldn't doubt that 1945 was way further ahead still. Some of that snow hung around for over 2 weeks (in Ch'ch was preceded by NW winds gusting to 90mph?!? in parts [that part form memory of a report, could be well off]

Just came back after checking the outside temp, now down to minus 2.1C....anyway, according to the media, yesterday's snowstorm was the worst in 30 years.
I can't remember a savage snowstorm in 1976?
Could you enlighten us on this, Ben

How about 86'? I think someone has posted this in the past but it's a good read...

On a slightly more localised scale the snowfall at the end of June 1968 (after a mild damp month) was followed by severe frosts and some places, most notably Tara Hills among the Metservice stations, had a very cold aftermath in July. Will post some comments and data taken from Gazette supplement later today when I dig them out.

I can't remotely access my weather stations at the moment ( ) but I'm told it was -12° in Omarama this morning, which is probably reasonably accurate, since the diesel in my Land Cruiser turned to yoghurt. It's currently -7.6° in Twizel, taken from the Vaisala WXT-510 outside my office at the Meridian building.

-12! Blimmin heck...will there be a thaw before the next front???? If not there could be a very prolonged period of snow on the ground to much lower levels than normal?

Dammit why does this happen when I'm up north for a couple of years???

The icicles are dripping in the sunshine, but they'll reform and freeze again this afternoon. The snow's going nowhere in a hurry. If the Weather Geeks are correct again - and I've been telling everybody here to expect more of the same next week/end - then the snow should be a lot deeper in a few days.

Neither can I - I was only 8 at the time and living in Rotorua. Nothing there, or I would've remebered it. But I've read about the event of June 1976. Chch was blanketed with about 6 or 7cm in the central city, a similar amount in Wellington hill suburbs, and flakes and sleet even in parts of Auckland. Widespread at low levels, but not exceptional depths except in areas where any snow is rare.

I imagine Castle Hill will keep its thck white blanket for some time, unless a strong unseasonably mild (and wet) northwesterly arrives soon.

What's your address, Flutterbye? When I've finished shoveling the snow out of my driveway (and street), I'll ship it down to you if you like.

 ;)
