We are in a clear slot with cloud banks to the east and west of us. The next one out to the west is looking pretty good for some action in the next few hours as it comes ashore :P

[edit - at 2.30 we are now under the anvil, and the western sky is pretty grim looking - its moving very fast]

Lightning strikes buildings on Auckland's North Shore
Posted at 4:36pm on 17 Jun 2006

Lightning strikes have caused problems on Auckland's North Shore this morning, with a bolt ripping a hole in the roof of one house.

A lightning storm passed over the city before nine this morning.

The fire service says in seven minutes, five buildings on the North Shore were struck, setting off fire alarms.

The chimney of one house in Westlake disintegrated, while occupants of a home in Narrowneck reported a hole in the roof.

I have just been outside clearing all the leaves out of the pool - not a pleasant task.

You can pretend the slushy snow is the foamy top of a cappuccino!

I must admit though that aside from the excellent lenticular stuff we don't get the spectacular cloud displays that coastal NZ does.
