I was stuck at work waiting for the heavy rain and hail to stop, I made it out to the car about 15-20 minutes after the hail, it was easily 10mm with some up to 15mm

The lightning was pretty good as well, I saw an interesting 'thing' about a second before the flash, there was like a strobe going off quite low down somewhere between Freemans Bay and Mt Eden. Wonder if it was some powerlines arcing as the atmospheric potential increased before the lightning?

There were some very strong squalls so probably some power lines blowing together somewhere... there were some big power glitches here..
wow that was much larger hail than here, but we were kindof on the edge of that

It was real neat down at the beach, got some interesting photos, but it was too light for a long exposure on the camera, so they were all coming out white.. but I got some neat arty shots that i'll upload soon so you can all see :D

Have seen several Lightning flashes out to the NW past 5 mins, perhaps another storm on the way if the Cell holds up.

hi
drove through intense hail/rain north of waiuku at 3:30pm today, visibility was poor, it was white out conditions basicly, had to slow to 50kmh....and lightning every minute :)
some were right over head with great purple flashes :)
.... saw 3 lots of great CG's only 1 km or so from the car as driving along at other times when out of the hail
excellent squall line, most impressive, best seen or a long time :)

foggys lightning tracker shows lots of activity around and to the south of pukekohe

Heavy shower here now.

Brian, interesting to get your report from Waiuku way.

By the look of the lightning tracker, western Waikato got hammered as well. The storm over AK city was out over the NW suburbs.

We have just had a very good squall come through - I was trying to photograph the lightning out of a ranch-slider - ended up mopping up heaps of water instead!

We just had another brief squall come through with a couple of belts of thunder and some 'rough' looking hail.

What does the clear hail mean? Would it have formed in one 'go' rather than be held in an updraught?

edit googled a bit
An opaque ice layer forms when the hailstone collects small, supercooled liquid water drops that freeze rapidly on impact, thereby trapping air bubbles within the ice and giving it a "milky" texture. When larger supercooled water drops impact on a hailstone, the freezing is slower, allowing the air bubbles to escape, and thus forming clear ice.

Cheers,

G
