I went 'arse over kite' this morning as I was putting my green recycle binout for curb-side recycling.
Broke an empty beer bottle and landed on my right arm elbow.
It's still sore -ouch
Very icy here but only went down to minus 2.3C

EVERE WEATHER WATCH FOR CANTERBURY AND THE KAIKOURAS
ISSUED BY METSERVICE AT 1953hrs 20-Jun-2006

SNOWFALLS EXPECTED ON THE CANTERBURY PLAINS AND THE KAIKOURA RANGES
ON WEDNESDAY COULD BE HEAVY FOR A TIME INLAND

A cold southerly outbreak is spreading north over the South Island,
and snow is expected over much of the Canterbury Plains on Wednesday.

The southerly should reach Canterbury Wednesday morning, then
temperatures should fall, with snow lowering to 100 to 200 metres
during the afternoon or evening. Some places above 300 metres could
receive 10-15cm in a six hour period from mid afternoon.

In the Kaikouras, similar amounts could develop above 300 metres
Wednesday evening.

a few rough days up ahead yet esp for the NI

Valid: Thu 22 June to Sun 25 June
Issued: Tue 20 June 2006 at 02:36 pm

On Thursday, a complex low should deepen east and north of Gisborne with several low centres. Southeasterlies around the low may bring warning amounts of heavy rain to the east of the North Island over a period of two to three days, with further snow possible in the hill country and severe gales in exposed places.

There is some uncertainty as to the location and track of the low centre and people in these areas are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts.

Very sensible. I wouldn't drive in snow and ice if I could avoid it. Bloody hair-raising.
And we drink flat whites, not lattes' - they are mainly drunk by people visiting from Christchurch. :P
Pffft...Christchurchians...they think they're so great...!

BTW, nice pics there, Graeme.
You watch it Gary! We'll force you to become North Otago or something! :D :D :D

Omarama is in North Otago, I believe. Isn't the Mackenzie/South Canterbury border with Waitaki/(North) Otago just south of Twizel? ;)

Its looking like most of active convective cloud will go up the West Coast of the South Island rather than the east. A similar thing happened on Sunday. The central North Island will get some heavy snow off this tomorrow while Auckland/Waikato will get hail/thunder.

Anyone able to see how it's looking for Christchurch/Lincoln yet? Hubby has a bunch of people flying in tomorrow morning for a massive meeting at work - fingers crossed the airport is open. I noticed TV3 had a little snow symbol for Christchurch city on the news last night, which I thought was unusual?

4.5oC at lincoln at the moment
maybe some sleet...as rain radar does show some rain around canty
but certainly nothing to get excited about, at this stage...
will be snow in inland areas most likely?
will have to wait for on the ground reports

might be a fizzer in the end (as I aluded to yesterday, going by some models)

edit, looking around at other canty weather stations, inland only as cold as 3.1
see
http://www.adc.govt.nz/weather/wd/index.htm
only 0.2mm of rain recorded at ashburton since midnight....

thanks ;) Sounds like maybe we've had our excitement for this winter?

still, things might develop more yet in canty
as the low moves up the west coast and the wind goes more SE....
i dont think they are quite of the woods yet...as its 2 nite that met service talk about snow to low levels....

Good call, as the cold air hasn't even come close to us yet...temps will start to drop from midday, I reckon...

Yes Gary, Blue and Gold until you get to River Bridge just out of Omarama :D , Red and Black from there  . :)
might be a fizzer in the end (as I aluded to yesterday, going by some models)
ECMWF since last week has had a Ridge quickly getting onto the SI so Rain/snow tending to clear by Friday esp inland.
Worst of the Storm is for Eastern NI with the slow moving LOW.

Yes, but if you look at the temperatures to the south, they are not unduly cold. At 6am, Campbell Island 2.6C and Enderby Island (Auckland Islands) 1.2C. These surface temps suggest snow to about 200m in Canterbury.

I dont think snow falling this early was forecasted, so best we just wait and see, temp should fall later in the day. Took this sunrise picture this morning just as rain was starting to fall in ChCh.
