See the photo section. Sadly I've only just had the chance to get the pics (was called out to Ohau B this morning :( ), and they're not exactly sensational.

Today's high was -3.2° at 15:05. Right now it's -5.6° and dropping like a stone. Beautiful clear sky, going to be a cold one overnight! Also there's a mist coming down from the north, so likely to be another Hoar frost. This time I'll try to get pics at its heaviest.

I know of black ice, and the frost you described is eaither a Hoar frost or rime ice, but I've never heard of a black frost. It could be a real phenomenon, but I've just never heard of such a thing. Maybe others here have?

You don't mean Jack Frost? ;)

EDIT: okay, Google is our friend...I found the following:

"Intense cold without hoarfrost, causing vegetation to turn black."

I have always said a Black Frost is when it is a clear night, the frost gets laid down and it turns cloudy at sunrise...The frost stays longer and it seems colder than a " normal " frost...

Anyways we have another helluva normal frost again... Just broke the Ice in the Dogs bucket... 8)

It's -10.4° right now in Twizel. The overnight low in Omarama was -9.9° (so far anyway). Another spectacular Hoar frost. I'll get some good pics this time.

Back from a great weekend in Arthurs Pass, ruined by me having a cold! Beautiful in the snow.... And thank goodness for politically incorrect log burners!

Another spectacular frost in Dunedin.
45minutes to drive what normally takes 12 minutes.
So white almost like a fall of snow.
Will post some photos later.

Same here though there doesn't seem to be any problems with our roads.
I recorded a low of -6.7° and have just been out to break the ice on the fish pond. Hardy creatures those goldfish :D
