Cold Anticyclone....brrrrrrrrrr

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

I think that after this coming cold weather event, there is the possibility of a cold, intense anticyclone over NZ.
This could see some interesting minimum temperatures in the McKenzie/ Central Otago/inland Canterbury areas. :-k
especially with the the snow around :)
Will a temperature come up to beat Ophir on that July day in 1995

I think Ophir held the record prior to that as well. Its a cold place! (I made a special detour when in Central a few years back to make sure I went there). :)

Ha. Ha. Ha.

Was it a good one? Was it in a Stevenson screen? Or was it a Grandad Special, hanging from a nail in the brick wall outside the ranchsliders by the BBQ on the patio...as most reported 'extreme' measurements are?

No idea sorry, probably a suspect backyard piece of seaweed, but whether its accurate or not it still indicates things were extremely cold.

Okay. The Omarama airport weather station recorded -13.4° on the morning of the 14th. That was more than cold enough for me!

It may be a cloudy high or a 'dirty' high as because of it's intensenessz, cloud may be trapped under it :(

The temp and dew point are playing catch-up here. If we get no cloud tonight it should become frosty, although there's already a good layer of snow on the ground still.

Currently in Omarama it's -4.1° but the dewpoint is -5.8°...meanwhile, at Lake Ohau, it's only -0.2 ° but the dewpoint is the same, so they'll most likely get a light frost. They have no snow on the ground there due to the NWer...it can be -7° in Omarama with a southerly, or no wind at all, while Lake Ohau will be basking in +10°, with a strong NWer. Bloody Föhn winds! :x ;)

We've had cloud overnight so our temps never got anywhere near that low. The lowest temp in the last 24 hours was -5.3° at 19:21, when the sky was still clear.

What was your low on the 14th, Andy?
