Wow. A funnel cloud...!? :D I knew there was something funny going on, but yikes!! That was cool though, I could see the developing storm starting to swirl and roll on the wind change. Nice clap of thunder after it all to, didn't show up though, it was an intracloud bolt. I notice on the back end of thunderstorms/hail storms, the larger hail seems to dominate the rain 10:1, and it seems to get bigger. Awesome pics people! :D 8)

What direction was the photo taken, Brian? Was the funnel over the Manukau?

Yes, Could be a small Funnel cloud there Brian. There was some towering Cu building into those Showers that crossed.

Land-based convection has eased now thanks to a bit of wind and passing of the diurnal solar maximum (minimum?)

Darkening skies to the NW.. amazing how quickly the T/Cu's are turning to low-topped Cb's today thanks to the cold trough! Tropopause height at the moment isn't bad @ around 10,000m.. Slot of unstable air ridging over the Waikato slightly.. with CAPE up to 180j/kg.
Land Cb's are total babies comparing with their seaward mothers.. anvils huge!!

According to MetConnect, a wide band of nastiness passed over you a while ago and a big blob of yukkiness is currently on the way. Behind it is a lovely emptiness and the promise of blue skies.

I'm a weatherologist.

You could never understand it. Far too technical and sophisticated, I'm afraid. And the crayon tends to get all over your clothes.
