I could see big flashes of lightning down your way, from about 4:00pm this afternoon. The flashes were clearly seen from Palmerston North.

Thanks for that, it did answer a thing or two :D One of my wishes is to actually go down to the Waikato in Summer and observe some storms, but I also want to go to Auzzie and check out some supercells  .
It's getting dark to my south west now and and anvil over north Auk is streatching over us here. Also, I can see very distant huge anvil tops to my west with the sun behind them. :o The forcast now is for rain tonight. Welly is being totally hammered and so has the central north island.
I would quite like to go to Aussie, as well, to check out some of those big storms they get in SE Queensland/NE New Soth South Wales. From what I've read on some of the Australian Severe Weather sites, November seems to be one of the best months to go and view these.

13361 strikes so far today.. but my 'squelch' is set to zero.
What a beautiful day.. active front to come!!

Had hoped we could see a few flashes or what ever from the west tonight, but things are looking quiet lightning wise over the alps.

Norht Island still looking very active.

Great information and graphics there Foggy.

We have just had a pretty good storm go through Palmerston North in the last 0.5hr. Lightning was pretty frequent (for a winter storm), up to 3 flashes every minute. The wind picked up and got quite squally, as well.

Based on the radar images on Sky TV, it looks like the back of that trough line and the associated storms should move across Palmy and clear within the next hour.

Just as I am writing this, we have just had another big flash of lightning and clap of thunder, from the NW.

yeah, I'm going over to the park now to see if I can see any lightning. I have already seen a couple of very powerful bolts outside to my south.

I observed 4-5 lightning flashes in 15 mins. One massive intercloud bolt included, it lit up the entire south western skyline. Not much visible activity at the mo, but there was a lot of low level cloud arriving with it. I think this thing has the potential to become quite dangerously severe.

This is quite an annoyingly slow front. The activity has died down a bit up here at the mo. Hamilton is basically guaranteed a front row seat  :D
