Aucklands Weather
Isn't Aucklands weather pretty awful-We (I'm in Auckland) have had 2 -3 weeks of summer in February and thats it-It has been cloudy most of the time in this anticyclone for the last 2 weeks and when it will finally move We'll "cop it again" with the south westerlies and the winter monsoon that lasts till Xmas while the rest of NZ anytime has settled weather that beats our summer.

Christchurch
At least Chch gets a lot of still days especially when theres a W or SW airstream over the country and also gets those nice hot NWers-The rain has started here tonight Reckon it be like the 11 March tomorrow with an almost stationary front.
As for Invercargill they get the SW a day before we normally do but then again they can be sheltered from the N as in this current pattern.
Say the SW of the NI will be quite warm tomorrow as the NE doesnt blow there.

Aucklands weather is considerably milder than the rest of the country.
For example at 6am this morning we had 18C, Christchurch recorded 11C.
But no, we hav'nt had a great summer. I think the highest temperature recorded was 27C(city).
Should get a big fall of rain tomorrow. The unstable air to the north of
NZ is advecting southward with some nice looking cb on sat pics.

According to NIWA (I think that's where I got the Excel spreadsheets from):
Auckland 1240 mm
Christchurch 648 mm
And the number of "wet" days > 1mm rainfall:
There has to be some penalty for a July avg minimum of 7C instead of 2C
Cheers,
Steven

there has hardly been 2 days in a row with the same weather conditions for the last 3 monhts here in the auckland area, been very changeable!
good if you like interesting weather I guess....
rain:
well, the airport is in the driest area, being the furtherst from any ranges, apart from waiheke island, which is a bit drier becuase it is a bit sheletered from the W/SW quarter winds.
some years wellington beats auckland for total rain, but i think auckland has the most days of rain recorded.....of the main centers...or is invercargil more maybe?
i lived in chch for 3 years
the NE with the anticlyclonid gloom and cool temperatures is about as boring as you can get weather wise!

and frost days per year
Long term averages
Air frost
Auckland city 0
Christchurch city 36
ground frost
AK 4
CH 89
Like Christchurch, frost does vary around Auckland. The environs of
Auckland do get alot more frost than the CBD/coastal suburbs.
Ak airport averages 1 air frost and 18 ground frosts a year.

This summer there has been a high incidence of troughs developing
just north of NZ. It is a breeding ground for low pressure at the moment and i'm sure it won't be long before another low develops up there.
The resultant moist easterlies have meant we are missing out on an
indian summer this year in the north. I suspect this unsettled pattern
will continue untill June to be replaced by the infamous disturbed westerly.
A fine saturday morning in Auckland, but with the humidity, one would expect there to be alot of cloud about today. Upper air sounding shows
potential for afternoon showers but I think these will be mainly over the
western/eastern hills. I expect thunder of the central North island this afternoon from localised cb buildups.

Auckland weather boring ???
I don't think the weather has been boring in Auckland of recent especially over Easter, Michael!!! ???????????
It's been jolly well boring here in ChCh recently but thats what you expect in April.
Interesting cumulus cloud 'Streets' today dotting the otherwise boring cloudy day here over ChCh and over the plains to the west of here, this afternoon. Light WSW here, not going back to Ne which I thought it may do ???
