1040 hPa anticyclone
Anticyclonic Gloom may establish itself over NZ later next week according to ECMWF as an anticylone may push it's pressure up to around the 1040hPa mark...
...but then, it may deliver us fine sunny days with frosts in open areas and severe smog to ChCh, Kaiapoi, Waimate ,Timaru and other places that are prone to severe smog levels in situations like this.
However, the good news is, that it may not hang around for long as disturbances in the westerly atmosphere, will move it away to the east next WE

The anticyclone should reach it's peak on Wednesday before moving over NZ,now sadly.
However, it looks strong enough to fend off any lows from the Tasman Sea, at the moment, maintaining a pressure of over 1030hPas, before moving away to the east.
I see Ecan are now making pleas for people to not light their fires with this on coming anticyclone.
I'm not going to light mine

Sorry but i really dont like Ecan. For one thing expecting people to not light there fires on a really cold night? you got to be kidding me. some elderly people die because of the cold because they cant afford eletricity, let alone power cuts and yet heres Ecan trying to stop woodburners and other solid fuel burners, when that is the best source of heat.Im afraid to say i have to shake my head at Ecan because im totally against them.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: I see Ecan are now making pleas for people to not light their fires with this on coming anticyclone.

I agree - the altenatives to wood burners would have to be a lot cheaper and more reliable before I would change.

Having just experienced Christchurch smog and an extremely cold Christchurch villa for a weekend I can see two sides of the coin.
People need to keep warm but people need to be able to breath good quality air. The solution sadly I dont have it but personally we use both a heat pump and Yunca multi fuel for the just in case scenario.
Also we dont have a smog issue here on the Peninsula.
The smog in Christchurch over this last weekend was an eye opener I certainly would not like to endure that most cold evenings.
