yes i agree Brian, that low has developed over the last six hours and seems to be plenty of instability around there.
Do you think in a situation like this that because its a bit warmer in auckland, any Cb's that do make it onto land may survive a bit longer due to the land temps??
the 12 hour satellite sequence shows this instability quite nicely

soil temperature only 10oC here at the moment (the 13oC rain has increased it a bit), so not very warm,....but an organised front will survice much better,....there is a jet stream squrt cloud just behiund it...might fire it up even more?
with the break in the cloud could see lots of different wind directions through the profile (NE at the surface, NW up at the high cloud level)

LOL, just a description I made up...
for when cloud suddenly shows up in a line indicating a strengthening jet stream.,.....which could provide extra energy for the front (like blowing over a chimney, takes away the updraft air faster, allowing stronger updrafts too occur....and also lowering the air pressure by cooling the atmosphere ...at the exit area of the jet (where it extends the furtherst south in the curve down and then up) and so that all increases the instability.....
something like ...i might not have the technical aspects correct, but thats the way i see it all working....LOL

We all had chuckles at Auckland's weather today on the voyage home.. a fine or partly cloudy flight right from Samoa to Northland.. then came in that pesky, warm stratus. Pilot said off a metar 'conditions have improved, and it's just overcast now at Auckland Airport.'
Typically it was raining. Ohhh you gotta love NZ weather.

Another wet day on the cards, thunder risk is quite low.. but those dewpoints are up there! 13°C not at all bad for this time of year.. showers coming down on the RR do have a sharp look about them.
Upper trough active to the WSW.. but looks like it will weaken as it heads over Tasman Bays and Taranaki tomorrow morning. (looks good for thunder there.. especially Buller earlier)

the unstable pool is the tassie looks attractive.
I see metservice reckons that 'bands of organised showers" are instore for us 2nite and 2moro morning.
I'd hate to think what bands of unorganised showers look like. Do they arrive late or in the wrong place, and do some of them have notes from their parents (Cb's) explaining that they cannot make it into the waikato today because they are sick or forgot their P.E gear??
just guessing really
