Black ring around the Moon?

I've had two calls tonight from two seperate people living in Nelson reporting some sort of Black ring (halo) around the moon. I've seen light coloured halos around the moon before but these people reckon it's a black halo blacker than the sky. I don't get that much phone calls but to get two from two non related people (apart from the fact they both live in Nelson) within the space of an hour saying they can see some sort of black ring around the moon.

Anyone know what that would be? Gary? Or am I being fooled?

I gave this second guy who called me the phone number for the stardome observatory in Auckland and suggested they may be able to help. I can't see the moon at all here in Chch as there is too much cloud cover.

I caught a glimpse of it last night during a break in the cloud in Chch, and didn't see any black ring around it.

how do you see a black ring against a black sky?
or was it like ink black....maybe it was some sort of light frequency interference where a rainbow ring would have normaly be...
