Yes, Stewart Island can really shelter Invercargill in a SSW flow.
As the surface low out to the SE of Otago moves further away to the east the flow will swing southerly and wintry showers will spread into the Dunedin area.

Low positioned 400km ESE of Dunedin is tending upper flow WSW, so Haast Pass right across to Banks Peninsular is sheltered due to the Southern Alps for the time being. Looks like some hail action could brush BP within the next couple of hours.
Some nice consistent gusts coming through now here in weak squally conditions.
well well well team looking very good for thunder here in Christchurch at the moment, curently very warm around 16C aswell.Keeping an eye on those cumulus clouds that are coming up along as the southerly shows its first signs. and looking extemly unstable.
Breif spit shower gone through with some sporadics still looking relativly unstable out there as the sun returns again.
Currently on 15C after being hidden behind that shower but still NE.
The best time for things to happen will likly be later this afternoon when the southerly hits.
Great oppertunity for me to be snapping away and practising different angles and shots on my new camera.
Cheers

Southern Fiordland, Catlins blanketed in snow
Posted at 2:30pm on 13 Aug 2006
More than 15 centimetres of snow has fallen in southern Fiordland and the Catlins, and a southerly blast is also bringing light snowfall to other parts of the South Island.
All roads in the area are now open again, although chains are needed for many routes.
In the North Island, police say snow and ice is making conditions along the Desert Road increasingly difficult.
Forecasters are predicting snow showers down to 800 metres from Taihape through to Tongariro National Park.
Gale force winds are forecast from south of Napier to Castlepoint in the Wairarapa.
Well, just got back from the Sign of the Takahe up on the Port Hills...what an absolute CRACKER of a day!! You could see for MILES and miles...from all the way up the Kaikoura coast to right down south on the plains towards Ashburton, etc...WOW! And you could see the spits of rain Jase was talking about, too...some nice looking CBs, but nothing too menacing....Highly recommend anyone who has the time today in CHCH to go and take a peak...no sign of a southerly yet....
(BTW...Was out at Hagley Park yesterday from 2:45-4:14 for a rugby game and the southerly was BITTER!)
Some photos taken from a walk around the back of the showgrounds by the Heathcote River. Some showers to the north, west and south and a bit of a cool southerly breeze on the open but a nice walk all the same.
Humidity down to 34%, dry air over us may have enhanced the visibility.

Surely an unstable today with lots of Cu going up to the west of Christchurch across the inland plains.
Unfortuately, there wasn't the needed 'impfffffff' to get things going.
Here in Somerfield and out at west Melton there was a constant light southerly breeze. As Jason pointed out there was a bit of a NE out Kaiaipoi way but I did notice the clouds glacierating very early, hense no thunderstorm warning for today, sadly
Never mind, the borometer is still low and we could get something overnight or in the morning???
Pictures to follow later

Yes John some nice glaciation out there big mamamtus clouds mixed with virga really had to be here before to have seen it .
Cold southerly breeze here now although not strong so perhaps things may settle then get going later when the trough hits.
Big quake before well not here I did hear wee rumble and small rattle of my beer bottles on the shelf. My Nanna felt it too in Christchurch it was centred over Murchison at 4:30pm this arvo at 5.9 on the scale.
Strange because I often sense If there is an earthquake coming Must have been wound up in the weather .
Cheers

Bit of hail in Chch (well it sounded like hail) in a shower about 20 minutes ago.
My parents said that there was a dusting of snow last night, visible as low as about 300m, on outer Banks Peninsula. Obviously there was more intense shower activity out there than in Chch. (which incidentially brought temps down to 6C in the afternoon, even without precipitation)
Yes hail reports coming from others too Ben not alot here got calm again i think it's back to NE here.
Anyway here are some pics from today.
Cheers
