Timing is very nice up there for the mid-afternoon thunderstorms.. very spring like with the second wave of land-based convection! :D

A Cb spawning off Great Barrier even too.

Now mostly cloudy here after a frosty sunny morning. :)

Saw a couple of cb's off to the north east at lunchtime - pleased to see there still were some to look at during the drive home :)

Sorry for the poor quality shot - by the time I got back to the computer, downloaded it from the camera (and realised I'd set the ISO too high) it was too late to get another.

NZWP midday sounding had 500mb temperature at -30C!

I notice a few cu tried to develop locally but never got going.
Nice cb's to far north.

Looks like the biggest thunderstorm of the day has just developed, over the NE waters of the Bay of Plenty.

The Bolteks aren't picking it up very well direction-wise due to the refracting eastern ranges. (wish there was a turn-setting available!)

have been able to watch lightning flashes way to the north, above the lights of the big smoke this evening from the spa pool 8)

the weatherzone sat image with ligthning overlay is plotting the plots nicely....

and there is strikes way out in the western tasman....which rick's and foggy's trackers are picking up....the signal must bounce off the ionosphere...
