any sunburbs that are in behind banks peninsular in a southerly, the wind dropping down off the hills warms up a bit, and so the snow level rises alot
also, the soil temperature is colder than the ocean temperature at this time of year, and so Lincoln does not get snow, but as head in land towards CHCH the colder ground compared to the ocean means the slightlwy warmer layer a the surface is no longer suported
thats my observations i made in the 3 years i spent at lincoln

Travelling through falling snow in a partly open viewing car was fun, even with the -20°C windchill involved It would have been better if the cloud bases had lifted for the return trip so we could see more of the mountainstgsnoopy wrote:Now that is one train ride I've always wanted to do, when there was snow on the alps. You got the best of the best, whilst it was snowing. Great stuff, I'm green with envy!Steven Graham wrote:Took the TranzAlpine to Greymouth today.
With the fresh coating of snow, today should be better ...

Latest Invercargill sounding has a thickness of 5198. Thats the coldest atmosphere recorded this year.
Interesting that a low developed off Banks Peninsula yesterday afternoon. Thats why CH got so much rain/sleet yesterday. I bet Banks Peninsula is a picture postcard winter scene today.
9C here in AK but it feels a lot colder. Gonna be a chilly day for the whole country.

It's not a warmer (effectively) daytime microclimate when the NE is doing its thing! My brother used to (may still do) do school visits around Ch'ch and complained about conditions at "Mt Unpleasant" and anywhere over on the eastern/northern flanks where there isn't protection from the wind. And yes, I know there are some pockets where it doesn't get in much.bronty wrote:Nothing but alot of sleet here in redcliffs. Seems we must have a slightly warmer microclimate out here being sheltered from the wind.

Nothing here in Amberley. Snow down to about 150m on the surrounding hills, but very light and patchy at that level and already disappearing fast. Cover above 300m looks deeper, but still plenty of vegetation showing through so can only be 5cm or so. We had 7mm of rain here overall, currently clear.

We had hail overnight here in Upper Hutt. When I left for work this morning, there we still large unmelted pockets of hailstones in the garden. My WX station shows the hail and heavy rain at around 0230 with a corresponding temperature drop and a southerly change. Baro now climbing as the front passes through. Still a cool 5.5C outside the house.

The sat image shows that Stewart Island is producing a rain/cloud clearence that can be seen extending through the invercargil area towards Gore (stops about half way to gore?)A lot of blue sky here with a WSW breeze.
but west and east (e.g Catlins) of invercargill, away from the sheltering of stewart island, the sat picture shows lots of squally cold showers passing through

North Island now feeling the icy blast, with reports of snow in Taihape and hail in Napier. Castlepoint was only 3C at 9am.
Partly cloudy in Chch, with more cloud to the south. Still probably snowing on outer BP, with LeBons Bay only 1C at 9am with recent precip. Port Hills have a nice white coating above about 200m.
