Looks like an active line of showers to cross Auckland shortly, Northland more in the firing line.

With 60mm of rain at Kelburn overnight to 9am the winter total now comes to 580mm - with more having fallen, perhaps another 25mm, it looks likely that only the 1881 (!) total of 640+ mm will beat it. Ironically, that years' annual total was near average.

By contrast, it's mostly cleared up in Chch now. A rather dull day here - only had a few brief spits of rain, but according to the rain radar, more persistent rain/shower activity was only just to the north of us.

Well wasn't that exciting? That was our south west wind change then wasn't it? Humid warm air being absorbed by the arrival of a cold front

Clearance wasn't lasting - we had a heavy shower about 1am. Still cloudy, but looks like it should clear this morning.

Would that be the wettest August for years :?:

It will be, but I don't have data past 9am yesterday for this month yet. Of the last 13 (1993-2005), 8 have been below average - last Aug. being the driest for 70 years - 3 average and only 2 above average. 1990 had 202mm and 1979 203 mm. These should be beaten, but not 1975's 246mm let alone the record 269mm from 1967.

As a slight oddity, despite this possibly being the wettest winter for 120+ years, sunshine here was above average in June and July and should show a small surplus for this month also. So while it has been a dramatic winter with the big rain events, I don't put it in the more miserable category with winters like 1977 (dullest, as well as being wet) and 1981. There have been more days than usual when I could sit in the sun at a decent coffee spot near my workplace.

Update: 40mm at Kelburn for Saturday, bringing the total rainfall from Friday night to 100mm. Monthly total now 206mm, so now the winter's total is 623mm, with just 643mm in 1881 to beat.

It should be noted though that the EWS rain data (2005 onwards) appears from "overlap" data to be 3-4% higher than that from the previous manual records.

I was a bit inebreated after drinking cider at our wassailing outing at Dunsandel so was unaware of any heavy downpours around 1am this morning.
However the were lots of interesting cloud forms yesterday across the plains.
Coming home in the bus around 6pm we went through a rather heavy shower around Burnham. There was nothing in my rain gauge at West Melton this morning.
2mm I recorded here in Somerfield from the rain early this morning.
