Moist, mild and gusty this weekend

Unread post by Willoughby »

With a departing but intensifying high on the move to our east by Thursday, and a developing low in the Tasman.. it should become rather windy upon the clearance of the fronts on Saturday.. should be some good 'ol northwesterly gales.
Dewpoints up to 12-14°C over the upper NI by Sat morning :D

Should see some locally very heavy showers around.. but the passages of showers or rain look rather messy at this stage.

Becoming icy again for the south by Saturday night.. but not as bad as it has been.

and much warmer too, to help kick into gear spring pasture growth farmers will be wanting after a long cold winter (at least for the upper NI anyway) ;)

Yes, some rain & showers at the weekend with a Low crossing the NorthIsland. The southerly that follows looks cool rather than cold.

Perhaps another Tasman Low mid next week.

Looks like a mild day in Chch today - already 13C. But I hear that cars have been stuck in snow on the Desert Road early this morning. Must be some warm advection snow, with moisture arriving there before it could warm up much from the previous cold outbreak.

Nice mostly cloudy day over the wonderful Waikato, after 9mm here overnight :)

Upper Hutt today....

Unread post by Shepherds Valley WX »

Nice forecast for this weekend Foggy...especially here in Upper Hutt/Wellington, I have recorded 27.0mm rain since around 2am (coinciding with Heavy Rain Warning from Metservice) and a strengthening NW wind. Barometer a steady 1003.7 hPa and a outside temp of 12.3 C.

Pity this did'nt arrive during the week and clear for the weekend! :?

How are things around the rest of the capital Wellington observers?

Still raining steadily in Kelburn/city, very little wind in my vicinity. With normal rain in June, very high rainfall in July and now probably a surplus in August, it will be the wettest winter since 1998 if not for a longer period - but every winter in between has been drier or near average.

Could be a convergence zone over Wellington and central NZ. Cloudy here in Chch, but no rain. (9am radar shows light falls in South Canterbury) Southerly breeze makes it cool compared to yesterday, but alot milder than what we got earlier in the week.

Quite a lot of rain about the western hills of Lower Hutt this morning. I've recorded 58mm so far, including 13 mm in the last 30 minutes (most of which fell in about 10 minutes). Radar shows a narrow convergence zone moving through, so hopefully the worst of it may be over, although there is still more rain out there.....

I see there are some strikes about 150 km's of the west coast of Auckland at the mo.

There seems to be a fairly active front/band heading our way

the most active part of the first front will go south of us (typical) but the 2nd front and low center is making more of a beeline for the general auckland area...and its that which the boltecs are showing has lightning strikes in it ;)

wee hoo it's about time for some good old thunder. There's been a bit of a thunder drought up here. Metservice is predicting a convective "ripple" to pass over the upper north this evening with possible thundery results. Bring on the light show :D

That forecast was bang-on, Foggy. It was a bit breezy this morning, and there has been steady rainfall across the Wellington region.

Some minor disruption with about half a dozen roads closed by slips this morning. A unit was derailed on the Wgtn-Johnsonville commuter line by a slip, and the line is still closed. There was also mention of a reservoir in the Hutt Valley discharging into the Hutt River for fear it would overflow. More of the usual road disruption at Paekakariki (SH1) - the engineers have an on-going headache with slips on the steep slopes overhanging the highway.

Tawa recorded 39 mm in the 12 hours to midday, bringing the month's total to 152 mm, and the year to date to 871 mm.

Rainfall figures for selected private weather stations in the region for the 12 hours to midday are: (There's quite a bit of variation)
Raumati South 47 mm
Mana 37 mm
Tawa 39 mm
Karori East 96 mm (gurgle!)
Strathmore ca 74 mm
Miramar 60 mm
Lower Hutt 67 mm
Pinehaven 50 mm
Kintore (near Martinborough) 39 mm

Rainfall here eased at about 2 p.m., bringing my total since midnight to 42 mm. The wind dropped abruptly at 11:30 a.m.

Just starting to rain here. Looks as though the bulk of the front is going to hit Waikato as usual. The rain approaching Auk may soon develop into something bigger

It's fortunate that the rain has now eased.
National Radio's 3 o'clock news reported 2 houses evacuated in the Aro Valley due to land slippage, as well as slips in Ngaio. Noting the rainfall figure for Karori, it seems that locality has received a bit more attention from the rain this time, as well as the Hutt Valley.

Tentative estimate for Kelburn rainfall for this winter could be 575mm - 590mm, the highest since 1998 - to get higher still one has to go back to 1975. However, winter 1998 followed a very dry summer and autumn.

For more extended wetness, 1974 and 1977 (and 1979 to a lesser extent) are good examples - April to Oct 1974 easily exceeded the annual average, and in 1977 every month from April to December, except October, was above average.

Gidday Wildland (and other Wellington observers) .... yeah, have to agree, a very wet day here in Upper Hutt, we have recieved almost 60mm in 24 hrs, both my automated WX sensor and manual guages have recorded the same amount of rainfall, so it was yet another significant rain event for the Wellington area. Have just taken the dogs down to the Hutt River, and it is flowing very rapidly and is the highest I have seen it for some time. Localised flooding of the river where it has burst it banks has occured down around the Block road turn off in Lower Hutt apparently....

METJET NZWN radar shows a clearance now, with the rain heading towards the Wairarapa and clear radar picture behind the departing system.

Wind has also ceased, we had a good NW breeze from 5am till around 11am when it started to drop off.

Currently a calm, overcast mist has settled over the pines here in the Valley, Humidity 91%, 1002.5hPa and rising, and a warm(ish) 10.4C.

Hoping for a finer day tommorow so I can do some fencing! :D

En garde! 8-[

Ooops. Wrong fencing #-o

Well, you might not have too much trouble digging them thar post'oles - depending on the soil type. Your fencing expedition might turn out to be more like mud-wrestling. Good luck.
