West or northwest gales

Unread post by tich »

Plenty of warnings out for eastern areas and (especially) the far south today. But little wind here in Chch so far, and another mild day to end the not so mild winter 2006.

Nice and mild with the wind gusty at times but not overly strong - yet? I see the midday readings have it very windy in Gore and South West Cape. :)

An average of 74km/h in that inland location is insane! Gore Aero also gusting to 105km/h. Gore has 2.8 gale days p/a, looks like this is one of them. :)

big gusts

Unread post by sw_windbow »

big hot gusts jumping out of a strong steady Westerly.

Temp at Otago Uni is 20 degrees.

The high clouds are a getting a thrashing. They look like the top of a CB when its gone into a jet stream.

Were a few lenticulars around earlier but none I can see right now.

No gales here yet, but wind has strengthened on occasions from later this afternoon. Noon mslp weather map shows tight isobar gradient over South Island, so inland areas should be (and are predicted to get) much stronger winds.

John Matheson from Nelson sent me a note about the 13hPa pressure gradient between Hokitika at 1024.5 and Christchurch at 1011.5 at 1pm today.
At 1pm, Hokitika had light rain and 10C, Christchurch 19C and 33% humidity.

Instead of creating a new thread, I thought I would stick with this one.

Another "Big Blow" likely???

Any way looks like another strong NW event, overnight and tomorrow, across the east of the SI, this depending on pressure differences 'twixt the West and East Coasts, with winds forecasted to reach 130k/hr in exposed areas on the East Coast of the SI.
I hope knot as our friut trees are in blossom and we don't want them stripped. [-(

I remember the 1975 event quite well being out in it.

They will end up in knots and large strips on the ground if they do blow and if it doesnt blow they will not ;)

Fires aready
Fire rages on high country station near Mt Cook
Posted at 2:22pm on 01 Sep 2006

A bush fire is raging on a high country station near Mt Cook.

State Highway 80 leading to Mt Cook Village is blocked, as fire service crews use the road to refuel the three helicopters being used to fight the fire, which is burning in Glenntanner Park.

About 30 firefighters and Department of Conservation staff have been on the scene since 8.30am.

Close watch on two controlled fires
The Department of Conservation says it's keeping a close watch on two controlled fires in rural Otago.

A fire near the Henley Reserve burnt about 17 hectares of a nearby pine plantation late Thursday.

A DOC spokesperson, John Gordon, says a helicopter has been sent to monitor another, separate fire in the Catlins area. He says there is some concern strong winds could strengthen both blazes.

I remember a saying when I was a kid (in the N. Hemisphere, mind you...)
"March comes in like a lion, goes out like a lamb"...or something like that, referring to windiness and instability of March...perhaps the same applies to the S. Hemisphere equivalent of March...SEPTEMBER! :-P

Bit of a pitty with that NE wind today kept the temperature right down.
Tomorrow you might want to hold on to your hats especially in the morning otherwise should be a warm day into the early 20's great day for the garden 8) .
Later on next week and into the wekend looks like another cold surge to attack much of the country perhaps a chance at thunder this time ;) Otago,Southland you can have the snow :D .
Wee way out yet though.
May I add that Fencepost seems to have gone to sleep ;) Been no forecast since yesterday and the only thing that has changed is the warning map.
Just thought I would let you Know about that.
Cheers
Jason.

...bugger all NW today, just a cold ENE blowing, which is good really, brings down the risk of a strong NW gale scenario developing damaging our fruit blossoms.

I see South West Cape is gusting to 161km/h
Puysegur to 141, Gore Ap 131 and Invercargill to 67km/h at 3am. 5am obs suggest winds have eased momentarily.

Heavy rain in the west 8.8mm in the hour to 4am at Milford, whilst Oamaru on 17°C. Those temps are crazy for Sep 2.

Quite strange that up here and in Auckland there is no wind at all this morning with fog.

Strong WNW with 8mm rain since 7am - does appear to be clearing from the west now. Was 16° at midnight when I went to bed.

We've had some strong gusts here this morning, probably stronger down the coasts of course. But the winds are dying, it's sunny and a beautiful 17°C. Dark clouds to the SW, maybe some rain that Invers got coming this way?

High enough winds to bring down powerlines & close the Tarra's

http://www.aaroadwatch.co.nz/index.html

Also the Milford Sounds road is closed due to avalanche hazard.

Yes Tich no gale winds just fresh to strong at times although eased off abit again.
20.3C at the moment so not too bad sun still hiding behind the high cloud.
EDIT.. Father just rang to say it's blowing a big gale at the airport where he works so just started apparently.
Cheers
Jason.
