who's the night porter at MetService?

Unread post by Compie »

So one goes to be with the nice warm thoughts of 23 and norwester for my gardening saturday, to wake up to the forecast of 13 and strong northerlies.

Grrr, I blame the night porter...

Oh well might have to get in the car and go 1 hr up the road, 24 for Oamaru. ;)

It looks like its a typo by the night porter!!

Should be warm conditions as far south as Dunedin as far as I can see...should it be reading 23 I wonder??

this is what we all thought last night.

Mosgiel was meant to get to 26 but that's downgraded to 14.

Seriously bummed, but actually the northerlies have really picked up here now and this time of the year they keep uus cool.

MMM Oamaru iis looking good today, are the horse races on I wonder.

Yes, Met Service were ambitious with those temperature forecasts for Dunedin and Mosgiel. Doesn't look to be the NW gradient there today. If a land breeze does cut in on the easterly you should get 18C or 19C.
I was in Dunedin for Thursday/Friday, enjoyed exceptional spring weather. But for a couple of hours each afternoon there was a cold easterly. I was wondering whether that was a sea breeze effect or just a gradient induced wind. Very early in the spring for a sea breeze but then September is a lot drier and milder in Otago this year than normal. I suspect there will be a good drought in Otago this spring/summer.

Met Service had a forecast low temp of 11C for Auckland overnight night when our dew points were stuck on 14C.
Temp fell to around 15C.

yes, good point, how are you going to get a low temperature less than the current prevailing dew point
i think they rely too much on computer generated info and maybe sometimes it needs to be human checked more?

Temperatures may rise later in the afternoon in the South Island as the thick blanket of cloud clears from the west.

NZstorm

I live on the otago peninsula, and we often are 'blessed' with the cool easterly sea breeze in summer, keeping us 5C at least cooler than even in town.

Todays case it's more of a gradient effect from what I can read, it's too stiff and persistent for a sea breeze.

Spring downn here (ask anny stdent during exam time) is a lot better than the perception of dunnners is, and you're right the last couple of days were stunning. Darn northerly has put paid to that this morning.

But anecdotally as mentioned things tend to go; cool easterly dies out by 4pm then Nor West influence kick in for the evening.

I'll report in later, see how it went.

Turns out the night porter was playing with the tipex.

they've gone back to the 23 High for today. I tell ya if I wasn't living in dunedin and was already prepared for several seasons in one day.

Looking at sky there's only about 4° temp gradient across the country with the whole east coast under the inflence of the nor easter.

We'll see eh?

The warm high of 22C i think is gone out the window although it could be a warm night ahead perhaps 15-17C for quite some time especailly once the NW kicks in.
Only got as far as 15C today was NE but absoulutly no wind outside now and overcast with a thick veil of high cloud.
EDIT.. 4 minutes on  NW breeze just kicking in now very light though at the moment looks like it is NW inland the high cloud has thinned out.
Cheers
Jason.

I was almost right,

the NE died some time after 4:30, however, although we have a NW sky, we don't have the wind with it and thus boringly we are now at 12°.

I'm keeping my eye on the night porter next time we get a warm NW prediction.

it's a strange anomaly that must get up the kilt of the folks down here, but once again tonight I am looking at sky weather 11pm and Dunedin is the warmest place on 19°, with 22k NW.

I can't keep count how many times I check temps at this time of night and Dunners is the warmest place in NZ.

Our image is not the best in the sun seekers handbook, but as any scarfie walking around the streets at this time of night will tell you, it can be quuite balmy late in the evening?

Go figure?

It's warm here too up the road in ChCh. I just went out and it was 18.5°C
Still lots of distant crackling sferics.
Interesting Boltex readings I'm getting this evening. :?
