Severe Storms/Active Trough, Upper NI, 1st-4th

Unread post by Razor »

Ok we are officially in trouble here. Steady rain with occasional heavy bursts over last hour has now turned to a full on deluge, the worst I have seen since living in the Waitaks for the last 7 months.

We're having serious innundation problems, garden completely under water no doubt compounded by recent dry spell making the soil less pervious.

No rain gauge here but this is now an extreme event in my books.

<Mod edit:> Title fix up.

Yet not much rain here in central Ak as yet, about 5mm.
MetService 3pm radar will be interesting.

Just been for a drive. Slips everywhere on scenic drive, swanson river nearly over top of bridge at bottom of hill. Sirens everywhere, and general traffic chaos as some people can't get through to their houses due to slips. This was a full on 2 hour event. Very very loud thunder came with the front.
Is clearing now. Freuqent thunder over city from departing front.

Action packed afternoon!!!!!!!!

Weather strikes early
1/10/2006 17:04:02

Widespread superficial flooding and numerous slips are reported in West Auckland as heavy rain accompanied by thunder has arrived twelve hours earlier than forecasters predicted.

Police say they've received numerous calls from Waitakere residents, and they say driving conditions are hazardous. Weather commentator Philip Duncan says a front is bringing torrential rain from Auckland northwards this afternoon, but it was not expected until overnight or tomorrow.

But the rainbands have moved more quickly than forecasters predicted. The rain is affecting Auckland, Northland, and the Coromandel Peninsular, with up to 120 millimetres falling very rapidly in some parts.

The thundery rain should move off to Bay of Plenty and Gisborne tomorrow.

North of Auckland, emergency services are at the scene of a serious three-vehicle smash at Warkworth. It happened around four o'clock at the intersection of State Highway One and McKinney Road.

The crash has involved two cars and a campervan. Three people have been taken to hospital, one of them in a critical condition.

Traffic can expect delays in the area.

With regards toa recent chat I had with Bob McDavitt, it seems that a warmer than usuall Tasman sea surface is conducive to the development of severe thunderstorms over Auckland, this is because of our small land mass.

Surface flooding out in far west Auckland with partial road blockages in a few places. We have had 83mm in the past 21 hours in my location. Much more rain and there will be some more major flooding (I'm thinking of other alternate routes home from work!)

The Herald did it as well - when I get home tonight I'll email the reporters who wrote the piece.

Edit - we are getting very heavy bursts of rain now on the North Shore - can't see the city at all - very wet out there!

Yup the drive into town got wetter and wetter this morning and now its raining as hard as yesterday. Its the second day of October and we can already safely bet its going to be an above average rainfall month!!!!

That felt like the storm of a lifetime in Waitakere yesterday...and I've seen some crackers tramping in Fiordland and the Southern Alps but this one took the cake for my mind

Do you think it's a convergence line or the cold front?

Thought the humid NE would have kept that band of Thunderstorms out to our NW last night going but it all weakened, just heavy showers here.

Warming today will enhance the shower activity.

It's just that One News mentioned that the front was now on Coromandel and I have heard of and seen early or night time convection before.

Well the metservice suggest its batten down the hatches time...big time!!!!

"The atmosphere remains very unstable over the northern North Island today. About Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato and Bay of Plenty, there is a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms, bringing localised downpours of 25-40mm per hour, and 10-15mm hail. About Bay of Plenty and Coromandel Peninsula, there is also a risk of damaging tornados.

Further south in Waitomo and northern Taupo, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms, but a lower risk of downpours reaching the 25-40mm per hour category. Hail of 10-15mm diameter could also occur in this area.

Further south again into Gisborne, northern Hawkes Bay, the rest of Taupo, also Taumarunui and Taranaki, there is a low risk of ordinary thunderstorms.

No thunderstorms are expected elsewhere."
