Very cold southerly storm 5-6 October

Unread post by tich »

Thought I'd start a new thread for this one, as it looks significant for the eastern and central North Island. (and to a lesser extent Canterbury and Kaikoura - we might get flurries to low levels) Apart from a few days in the far south, NZ didn't get very cold wintry weather (ie snow to low levels) last month, but tomorrow should see a return to wintry conditions.

According to the forecasts, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay should get some heavy downpours with thunder and hail up to early Friday, as well as the very cold temperatures which could bring snow down to 500m - a level you'd expect in a very cold outbreak in winter, but not in October. (though not unknown before) And southerly gales as well - adding windchill to temperatures which could easily end up as record low maximums for October.

I must add that Wellington would've felt very cold today, but windchill would've been the major factor. Tomorrow will be really cold.

Very windy here over night, but no recordable rain at my place. Stars out this mornings. Today could get interesting with colder air due latter today.

My daughter and her visiting inlaws from the UK have flown to Queenstown - at least they'll get a decent day today.

The southerly has strengthened this morning in Chch, but it's still sunny, with just scattered cloud. 7am radar shows shower activity well offshore.

Fine cool day here with a fresh Southerly, afternoon temps around 15C.
Dewpoints only 5C.

A small shower has just developed east of here so the fine weather forecast not correct for every one.

Soft hail is made from a snow flake which is rolled into a ball due to the strong convective turbulance of a cb. But the term soft hail is technically no longer in use, this form of precipitation is now refered to as snow pellets. Snow pellets can be observed with surface temps upto about 6C.

A small shower has just developed east of here
Looks like a shallow surface trough has passed through this afternoon.

Anyway with all this cold air around, perhaps a light frost tonight?

I think the low last night was about 4C, but no doubt colder (and frosty) inland - breeze would've kept Chch from getting colder. Nice, sunny day here, but looks like east and south of North Island are still getting the wintry showers and snow on the higher country. A Trademe poster even reported she'd seen light snow falling in the Wellington hill suburb of Brooklyn early this morning.

Quite a South-Westerly change going on here. Some gale force gusts and a band of black cloud sweeping in. Temp dropping like a spring leaf.

Christchurch has been cool the last few days - so going from 11° to 20° probably feels rather warm. ;)
