Another round of thunder here.

Just skyped my other half who is working in Newmarket, who had a bit of hail but not much.

Sunny in Chch but cumulus now looks to be darkening to the southwest.
Well those clouds delivered a few spits, plus I thought I saw a tiny bit of small hail or sleet. Sunny again now.

Reports of snow to low levels around Greymouth and Westport - that sounds unusual for October.

Saw that north shore storm on my run up mt eden just now. Very very windy...where is michael today??? :D

So thunder is definitely appearing further north than the metservice predicted.

Desert Road is closed and heavy snow reported at Ohakune and National Park townships. This is packing some punch...like I said yesterday its a bit more significant than a 'flick'!

Interesting report of 15mm hail. Good observation to have. Radar hail algorithim indicated 10-12mm hail.

The convective depth has gone just a bit deeper than anticipated - assisted by higher dew points up over Auckland Northland way than further south.

Looks like it has melted at Ohakune, but interestingly, Taupo was only 4C at 1pm, with 1.2mm of precip in previous hour.

Squally Thunderstorm passed over my location near the Airport at about 11.45 am with a burst of small hail stones (around 5mm size).
On the drive back to Mt Eden I noticed larger stones lying on the side of the Motorway, perhaps up to about 1cm size.

Photo- looking west mid morn, this Cb was part of the line that crossed Ak area around lunch time

We got that too, ripped through the central city with much noise and bluster, but passed thru quickly. Enough to turn the world white briefly

What an interesting couple of weeks we are having

Strange weather today some nice towering CU came through at about midday and what could be falling from this CU but Sleet very close to flaking 8) . To add to that it wasn't even cold but shows you how glaciated and cold the atmosphere must be.
Maybe a few more icy showers overnight as there is some icy looking showers on the horizons now.
Cheers
Jason.

Snow in Lower and Upper Hutt...
Trademe Forum reports of the white stuff in Masterton, Wainuiomata and Wellington hill suburbs too - funnily, news item had just said that Wellington had escaped the stormy weather that was plaguing other parts of North Island.
Only 7C at Awhitu at 4pm - were you getting hail Brian?

Most of the hail was 10-12mm, just the odd bigger stone. Picture here of stone measured at 15mm.

Midday sounding indicates cb tops to around 6000m.
