Extreme Warmth possible from Friday 13th

Unread post by Willoughby »

Well the 00z run of GFS was progging 850mb temps of 17 just off the Marlborough coast for Friday...!

Strong heatwave developing over SE Aus thanks to a deep heatlow in NW Australia again.. gale dry northwesterlies will carry them well over the Tasman.

And streaming across far past East Cape at 15C (850) , could that mean highs' of ~29C for inland Canterbury and 27 around Hawke's Bay?

Gusty dry northwesterlies will again be very bad news for forestries in the east with the fire dangers likely rising to extreme.

yes Ricky was talking about this on BfM this morning.

We had to light a fire last nite it was so cold.

Also got really close to some C-G stikes yesterday out at Riverhead. What a great day

Will mean cloudy humid weather for Auckland which is better than cloudy cool weather which we have currently.

Hasn't taken long for the warmer westerly airmass to replace the wintry southwesterly of yesterday - up to 22C in Chch today. (20C now) But the upper atmosphere still looks as if it's in a cold airstream, by the look of the high cloud over Chch today.
Several days of warm northwesterlies to come, but then... back to yet more cold southwesterlies by Sunday or Monday, with snow to low levels in the south. (according to MetService)

Already 25C in Chch - might get even warmer, unless a northeasterly or southerly change arrives this afternoon.

Yes that wind change has hit and the temp now a pleasant 17 degrees

I see tomorrow high from the MetService for Christchurch is 26.It was a mild night with a low of 17 and Kaikoura and Timaru were 22 at 3am with a howling nor'wester which apparently blew the roof off Timaru Boys High School last night!

We had 26 degrees at 1pm with a nor'wester, two hours later it was down to half that, 13deg, as the wind shifted easterly.

Ironically, my father is involved in a civil defence exercise on Banks Peninsula tomorrow, the scenario being devastating hurricane force northwesterlies with winds averaging 70 knots and gusting up to 100 knots! Tomorrow (hopefully) doesn't look anything nearly that bad.

Hard to get used to the heat again the sun had some heat in it around lunchtime which pushed the temperature right up to 25C.
Not before the NE kicked in during the afternoon.
Breifly heard the wind in the early hours but just doozed it off  however I heard Timaru got some big gusts with the Timaru Boys High school GYM's roof blew off as well as several other reports of roofing iron being lifted and trees uprooted.
Could be another big blow overnight perhaps abit stronger this time further north might be one for inland farmers to watch for so check the candles ;) .
I would be looking at 28C tomorrow maybe 30 inland or Hanmer etc certainly something farmers wont want.
Up to 34C in Tasmania today.
Keep watch Sunday night looks interesting 8-[ .
Cheers
Jason.

got back from adelaide about a week ago when the heat wave was sort of just starting. It was 29c at 9am and got to a high of 35.4c for the day, very windy. It must be extremely hot over there now.

Right on cue, wind just got up, temp just took off.

21.4° right now and rising. I better close my window before it gets too warm inside to sleep.

Terrific winds again overnight causing a flare up of the fire which burnt two weeks ago. Can smell the smoke from the front door.
Of course very very warm as well.
