If you check the site you will see the peak gust was 140kmh. A gust of that speed is plausible with a mean speed of 100kmh.Fujita Phil wrote:Sorry still don't believe those winds are 150kph. That would be doing windspread damage over Dunedin. Down the pennisula Tairoa Heads are average about 100kph

Thank god that's all over (for the moment).
it's been a helluva past 24hrs, from cold low cloud and drizzel to extreme winds and near record temps.
As for the winds, the town is a mess, I had to stop twice on the way home to clear debris off the road, and there were trees down, a roof lost and 2 trucks on their side, some poerlines down.
But with all the doors wide open, there's not a breath of wind out there now, as they say the harbour is a mill pond. I'm sure the firefighters and residents of Ravensbourne are all breathing a sigh of relief tonight.

That was
The stoppy kitten's weather station at Tainui on the coast of Dunedin, near St Kilda for those out of town.
Last 24hrs 10.4°C ( 6:13) 30.6°C ( 15:00)
Calendar month 0.6°C (8 Oct 5:47) 31.3°C (13 Oct 13:13)
Fastest wind gust last 24hrs 169.8km/hr ( 13:27)

I'd really love to get a system set up where we are on the Peninsula, as my hand anemometer gets some cool readings, but as we know they're not accurate.

i think 169.8km/hr is too high a windspeed?
i think there must be a units conversion problem with the software
some photos of the weather station and siting would be great, if possible
but if its an elevated site on a steep hill side, then that windspeed is achievable (it occurs here on this coastline at times)

The windfarm site at Hau Nui near Martinborough has recorded gusts of up to 217 kph in its short history. NZ records for both islands are around the 250kph mark. At higher altitudes still there is very little data, but I heard the presenter of a talk on wind-related research say that it's likely that the blasts that blew a hut off Mt Cook in Jan 1977 reached 270kph+.Manukau heads observer wrote:i think 169.8km/hr is too high a windspeed?

Looks like the gales are returning to Inland otago/Southland with Gore on a W-NW at 82kmh.
Been cooler today got to 21C under onshore coastal NE winds but NW should kick in tonight pushing the temperature up from 16C of which is it at the moment to perhaps 18 or 19C for much of the night.
Look forward to Monday's weather Lets hope it all works out.
Cheers
Jason.

I saw on the news tonight (TV3) that the helicopter pilot mentioned that they experienced some 70 knot winds while fighting the fire in Dunedin yesterday and had to ground the helicopters for a while. They were more in the middle of town where as my weather station is more exposed than they were to the winds.Manukau heads observer wrote:yes, i am aware of the high windspeed that can occur in exposed places

Had some brief spitting rain mid to late afternoon out on Banks Peninsula. Unforecast, but insignificant.
BTW, another place that seems to get very windy is Castlepoint. I often hear of very strong gusts being recorded there and mentioned on TV1, eg today's 165kph gust. (which must be hurricane force)

Yes Tich did look abit precipative late this afternoon with a slight weak CU top to them I think this was created by the warm front clipping the east coast as it seemed to be only quite coastal.
I Tend to go with if winds are over 130kmh that is classified as hurricane force gusts before that is severe gales or storm force winds of 100-120kmh.
Certainly would be quite destructive if that howled through Chch city with gusts of 150-165kmh. Strongest winds I have been in was a mad dog NW gusts averaging 80kmh gusting to 112kmh that was during a wind storm in 2001 near christmas.
How high did the winds get on Canterbury's big blow so many years ago which completely flattend pine forests and caused widspread damage?.
Cheers

105 knots (194kph) on Kaikoura Peninsula, 93 knots (172kph) at Ch'ch airport, according to Met. Service summary for the month (August 1975) - date was 1st.

I'm not certain but I think the peak gust at Chch airport was 93 knots, with averages in the mid 60s (hurricane force is 63 knots mean speed). 93 knots is about 172kmh.Jasestrm wrote:How high did the winds get on Canterbury's big blow so many years ago which completely flattend pine forests and caused widspread damage?.

Ch'ch Aero recorded 19.6 and Kaikoura 23.5. Stayed quite warm until about the 5th. Overall the month was warmish, wet and very cloudy in most places (relatively wettest in Canterbury, parts of Otago, Nelson & Manawatu. Record low sunshine in Dunedin, Queenstown and Greymouth). There was a big rainfall event on 19th-20th with 130mm-200mm around Lyttelton & Banks Peninsula

I think Manukau heads means Albatross colony...lol.reports of trees down and trucks blown over and buildings loosing roofs means there was definately windspeeds over at least 140kmh Cool
if it is true, then whooho, go otago peninsular!
( i have been out to the gannet colony once before, great spot out there
Berkshire North of Te Anau west of Hokitika.
