Everything's moving quite quickly. Most of the action is wnw of CHCH and in north Canterbury and now moving up the Kaikoura coast.

Next trough due at Labour weekend!

That southerly buster could be interesting for Wellington and further north along the east coast this afternoon/tonight.

Cloud gradually built up this morning around Akaroa - a shower with hail (very briefly heavy) about 11.30am, but just cloudy since then.

The only bust was metservice forecast for thunder for ChCh. But its outlook Tstorm forecast was good, Did go out for a drive thru a couple hail showers and heavish rain, bit of surface water about so must have been some quiet heavy stuff fall earlier, thought I saw a couple flashes aswell.

Yea next 'possiblity' is larbour weekend, although not that exciting looking at latest model run. Could well change! :)

Ohh well still good to see our first good chance for thunder happening in pre storm season as I would like to call it  .
I think if the southerly came through in the afternoon things would have been abit different for sure.
Will put up a few pics later.
Yes Labour wekend looks interesting as I mentioned before low crossing south island with the chance on saturday what about Monday anyone? labour day looks like it will be W-SW and quite strong though.
Cheers

Yes, perhaps Blenhem will get a Thundery shower.

That dry air is a bit of a killer for storms ( 4-5C dewpoints today) but there's more of a propensity for your coastal N/Easter as we move toward Xmas.

Just steady rain here, 5mm so far.

Never really looked like much strong vertical developement today, the Cu which was building up ahead of the wind change was quite shallow. Wind was E here for a few hours this morning, which must have helped the buildups a bit, but the broader pattern never looked very favourable.

Temp -33C at 500mb over South Island. With air that cold aloft the surface dps only needed to be about 7 or 8C today for deep moist convection.

Dont worry, the fire's been lit since early afternoon, and yes it has been around 7deg all afternoon, but its up to 9.5 now, and the max today was 15.2 at 9am. Rain has now stopped and we ended up with 6mm.

Hillmorton in Chch got nothing, while outer Banks Peninsula only got a brief late morning shower. (albeit with hail - but I didn't hear any thunder) The southerly was cold and gusty though, but it has died down now, plus skies have now cleared (in Chch) - frost tonight?
