Severe due to Slow movement.

Probably the risk of Thunder today is higher east of the city due to better day time heating out that way.

SEVERE T/S's!!!

crikey, well we'll see. I would tend to agree to Brian on this one, ie more rainfall than anything else.

One of the conditions we have decided upon for severe thunderstorms in NZ (and many other places) is 25+mm/hr.

Still the same weather system - maybe the thread title needs altering.

Seems that the heavy rain has been north of Chch. Rained overnight around Akaroa, but dry this morning. Coming back into Chch late this morning, there's been a little rain as I reached the city, but wet ground indicated more substantial stuff earlier. Skies looked dark to the north.

Just very weak though.

Looks like a crop of showers will drift in from the NW this afternoon, perhaps turning heavy over the warmer land.

Heavy rain moving onto the North Shore area now. It's just one big mass of grey from shy to land. I'm going to get really wet getting out to my car!

Downpours continued off and on last night after my post very breif dollops with 12mm falling within an hour.
When I checked the rain gauge this morning there was 20mm in there and that was just from the downpours.
21mm now obviously with these lighter showers coming through this arvo hasn't deliverd much.
We are just putting our pool in at the moment so our first bit of water was added overnight  bit annoying because it's gotta have the lining down in a few days.
Took a pic of my rain gauge too just so ya know what it looks like  :D .
Cheers
Jason.

Wow, thats an amazing raingauge. I've never seen one that big before. I like the way you've used a wooden frame to support it. How do you empty it? Do you use the ladder to climb in and use a ruler to measure the accumulated rainfall? I know you have big downpours at your place but I never imagined you'd need such as big gauge. :D

PS Your new swimming pool looks rather small though... :D

PPS Seriously, your raingauge will not be reading correctly mounted the way it is. You need to get the top of the gauge up above the top of the post.
