Hi all,
just saw a extra lot of traffic on my stats and see it originated from here so had a nosey and seeing this looks like another great weather forum i just had to join on in :)

As for the rain, its slowed quite a bit since earlier today. just light drizzle now. maybe the calm before the deluge?

Your SE are a bit like Canterbury SW ie they can bring rain especially if southerly enough through the strait or through the gorge but once more easterly its fine and calm

That front has just cleared the Far North, and is starting to wrap around the low nicely.

12mm so far here, baro dropping off quickly :)

MetService sounding very upbeat with the thunderstorm potential.. just hope the cooling aloft gets really going tonight.

Interestingly GFS has progged quite a bit of heavy rain just off the Waikato coast from midnight tonight.. not often it would show that.

The skies are clearing over Northland and should clear down to Auckland by mid to late afternoon.

The midday Whenuapai sounding is cooling aloft as expected.

Looking good for deep convection - first developing over Northland and then spreading down into Auckland.

There is small low circulation that is moving onto the far northwest of Northland and should move down across the province. This will aid wind convergence and help trigger the action.

Good luck too you north islanders up there for thunderstorms today :D
A pretty dull day in Christchurch with some boring low cloud, and a cool NE breeze.
Turning southerly later on as expected, along with rain tonight/ tomorrow.
Could be some heavy falls tomorrow morning! 8)

I think this storm will develop regardless of afternoon sun shine. It's looking great out there at the moment.

Looking at around 12km over Northland, but in today's conditions they wont have much of a chance getting to those heights.. I would think.

If all goes according to plan, average tops may go to 24,000ft and temp -35C and max tops to about 33,000ft temp -42C.

(The tropopause was at about 27,000ft on the noon Whenuapai flight).
