Good blow here, some powerlines down on the next street from here( looks very dodgy) and the odd small tree branch down along my street-photo.

at 4pm it was:

from the WSW (240 degrees) at 47 MPH (41 KT) gusting to 63 MPH (55 KT)

at the aiport :)

the airport is obviously very exposed to the WSW wind, sticking out into the manukau harbour as it does 8)

I can remember in 1971 seeing a car flying along that main road near the church in Turakina on the lefthand side facing Wanganui and it flipped on its top

There are branches and things everywhere. There was a fire engine just up the road doing something too. In weather like this we seem to get a southerly as the wind whips around the manukau heads so when you look up the lower level clouds were coming in from the south and the higher ones coming in from the west-southwest. It ends up being a funny mix, and very damaging down our south west facing street, that is lined with large London Plane Trees

i would say that there would have been exposed locations in your area that were getting gusts of 55 knots, a bit higher than I was here, due to the funneling effect of the waitakeres....

(its called the WSW squirt)

Wow those winds are insane!!

Reed switch seemed to have fixed itself Brian.. don't want that to happen again in an active squall line.

Just gusts to 30 knots about Hamilton today.

Very nippy tonight.

Warming up quickly in Chch after the cold snap - shot up from about 0C to 15C in the 3 hours from 6am, and now it's 17C.

Yesterday's 6pm weather map showed very tight isobars around the low to the east of the North Island - I imagine central and eastern NI areas getting gales as well. And I was half expecting the Desert Road to be closed last night by snow and ice, with Waiouru obs only just above freezing. Snow levels I guess would've been unseasonably low in the central plateau.

Bit more than a breeze out this way some gusts just sitting on gale force at times enough to rattle the house 8) Also quite exposed next door with new houses in so funnels through quite nicly despite the dust  .
Certainly is something there for Friday the 17th most likly looking at breif rain and NW gales at this stage heavy falls in the alps with thunderstorms perhaps. Overnight could be interesting though  .
Cheers
Jason.
