I went for a drive to Rakaia around 5:30pm but a bit too late for the storms, can't confirm any hail unfortunately Weather Watcher but it seems likely some would've occured. Deno's family in Ashburton could have some idea as to any hail that may have fallen there?

That NW that sprung up ahead of the front here in Chch I think wasn't good for the front and feared it may happen, otherwise the storms could've moved up over us but they did the usual route of Ashburton then offshore.

Cool to hear the report of a Tornado. :D

Ciao

I am not surprised about action in Tauranga, stormvue was having a ball around BOP earlier on. Nothing terribly exciting here except for windy wild squalls followed by moments of stillness that make it seem very surreal.
I guess the wind gusts are around 35kts. It should be great up at the lighthouse.

I can't make it, bugger. Have a friend arriving from New Plymouth (long journey for him I should imagine).

Cool to hear the report of a Tornado.
ZB had dropped the story on their 1pm news so it can't have been much.

Not completely over for us down south - had a tiny bit of hail in central Chch about an hour ago. Otherwise it's been sunny with passing clouds, but the cold southerly is still gusty at times.

Got to be way over 100km/h here, phone was out for 3 hours. It’s crazy out there. I nearly got blown off the road travelling at 60km/h, branches down everywhere, train barriers jammed down in Clark St(likely weather related) hail and driving rain. I had to put a sledge hammer on the laser light roof to stop it from ripping off. You guys sure this thing hasn't bombed?

baro rising here now, dipped at 989.7 just before 3pm here
update gusting to 71kts (131kmh) at the heads now , listening into the nowcasting!
man, i was up there in the calm before the storm!

getting streadily windier and windier here
marine foreast of gusts to 50kts needs upgrading a bit.....as most of the nowcasting stations are going way over that speed now

met service now put out a warning on the SW gales occuring:
AREA/S AFFECTED: NORTHLAND AND AUCKLAND
FORECAST:
Southwest gales with frequent gusts to 120 km/h are expected during
the next few hours. Winds should ease below gale from about 8pm this
evening.
but, why could they not have put that out this morning?
you could see it was going to be windy, looking at the sat picture , etc
i have been telling people around here to batten down the hatches for the last couple of days...

update: have had some power cuts here....
not quite as windy as was just before 5pm....

manuaky harbour looks awesome...can see big areas of spray lifting up into the air

Looks like it's cold and wet over a large part of the North Island, with 4pm temperatures probably what's normal during a cold outbreak in winter, eg 10C in Auckland. Only about 11C in Chch, but the sun's shining.

Snow on Mt Herbert on Banks Peninsula viewed from Burnside Park on the northern side of Christchurch taken about 4:30pm today. Sugarloaf with the TV tower on the right. Thought I saw some snow near the tower this morning but without going up there it was difficult to be sure.

Should've been a bit on the Port Hills, going by the fact that it got down to 2C in Chch during the rain last night. But, I guess it would've melted quickly.

I've just been to the Trademe Forum, and a poster has just reported there's been a big hailstorm at Mt Maunganui, leaving a snow-like blanketing.
