Was looking good for awhile but it's too offshore of being stuck in a SW flow. Also the Westerly is tearing the storm apart unfortunatly.
Maybe later on tonight when the trough moves over us things should be looking much better .
Cheers
Jason.
Just heard Queenstown Airport is closed due to snow sure sounds like it's a cold one coming hopefully tonight proves interesting.
Windchange just hitting with black clouds about no lightning but perhaps some heavy rain on the cards soon.
Cheers
Jason.
Had a briefly heavy shower of rain about 1/2 hour ago. The southerly change arrived and sent the temperature plummeting - now only 9C. At 4pm, Oamaru was 4C, Timaru 5C and Tara Hills 3C, so snow could be well down on the hills of South Canterbury.
The bad weather predicted in Canterbury may be hitting home.
Hail has been reported in Fairlie in South Canterbury.
A caller to the Christchurch newsroom says his daughter, who lives five miles south of Fairlie, told him the hail there is so thick she cannot see the next door neighbours' house. She told him they are experiencing thunder and lightning. The southerly storm is predicted to hit Christchurch this evening with the possibility of snow to 500 metres.
Tonight's low is expected to drop to 4 degrees.

And there's just seen an item on TV1 News showing snow in Central Otago falling in Arrowtown and the Crown Range, and saying that snow's just started falling in Dunedin.
ashburton is down to 2C any1 think that we may see flakes in Christchurch tonight?
Earlier today, I wouldn't have thought so, but the way that the temp has dropped in Canterbury in recent hours (and that's already been snowing in Ashburton - only 100m asl), I wouldn't be so surprised now. That said, November snow in Chch is a very rare event - I think the last time it happened was 1976. (30 years ago)
Looks like weather forecasters may have been stumped again, re snow to lower levels! Although I never saw anything in models I guess its alot harder to forecast flurries more than anything, and if there were to be put into forecasts that would probably just panic people more than anything.

The ECMWF has been indicating a wintry out break for over a week now so no suprise to see the low level snow today.

Another poster now reports it's snowing in Weedons, near Rolleston and not far from Chch. Down to 3.8C at Hillmorton and it's raining steadily in central Chch.
