There's a lot of moisture in the air, but no rain so far.. Sun IS out, and blowing southerly... warming up a wee bit... GO!
Showery in some other parts of Canterbury this morning (eg Banks Peninsula), but nothing reaching Chch yet.
Recorded 0.4mm in a short shower at my station between 7:40 and 8am. Nothing here at work on the NW side of town near the airport.

[quote]In Canterbury and about the Kaikoura ranges, scattered heavy showers are also expected to develop this afternoon, especially inland. Although these showers will probably produce some small hail, the risk of these showers producing a few thunderstorms is currently considered low.[quote]

Looking cool down there for a good convection day.
Currently 15Cdp7C, not a good set of numbers for thunder.

Storms currently off the North Westland/Buller coast.

1pm weather map shows a fractured system over the South Island, with Canterbury currently in a gap between fronts. (hence the fact it's sunny here now) Looks like something could happen in South Canterbury/North Otago later this afternoon (Oamaru had a NE wind at 1pm), but the real southerly (with the winds and cold showers) probably shouldn't hit us until the evening.

my gut feeling is north canterbury is going to get some good CB's in the next few hours.....as the low and front cross over the main divide and re forms off kaikoura....

Well i believe theres a good chance with thunderstorms later on this evening, with the conditions we have now and the NE wind flow combining with the next southerly change?
Not a bad day here in Christchurch, much nicer then what was expected up untill now. :?

Had some breif spits around 5pm from a shower that clipped us to the north otherwise pretty calm as.
Just had a big break in the mid level cloud with blue skies now and some Dark CU to the SW and also a dissapated cell to the NW.
Not sure what will happen now we will see.
Cheers

Hourly radar shots this afternoon shower activity along the foothills and spreading further east in North Canterbury, but the plains staying clear. I guess that'll change when the main southerly hits later this evening, thought it may be too late for thunderstorms. (but hail looks more likely)

Just looked at the Catsle Hill webcam - it's currently 4C there (at 700m asl), there's been 8.2mm today, and there's a fresh dusting of snow on the nearby mountains.

Work up at 0430 this morning to heavy rain and hail, then again at 0730 to heavy rain and hail.

Yesterday Aaron and myself went for a drive out to oxford way, nothing really of interest to note. Encounted heavy rain, couple of nice bases but nothing of very much interest.

I think if the temp got up abit more nad the southerly eased back to allow the NE to push thru earlier we may have had something.

Certianly a wintry day today with the isolated heavy showers and hail going through in some places possibly might get a clap of thunder if it's really heavy in a few of them later on.
Just moderate to slightly heavy rain here about midnight last night and just had a light shower go through but no heavy rain or hail its quite dry here with a cold SE wind.
Cheers
Jason.
