Weather related:
Nice Thunder/Lightning event in Trentham, Upper Hutt last night, only a brief display, but still good to see! Pretty average day here today though, heavy showers, S breeze and quite cool....
I can see that snow on this side of the Tara's as well Spike_01...unreal for December!

I headed south at 1pm and caught a nice cell just west of Ngatea. Very heavy rain, a couple of cg's flung around with some loud thunder... nice!
I stuck around the plains until around 4.30 in the Te Aroha region, no action except for a cb building off to the west over towards Mercer.
Headed back to Bombay to refuel, saw a very attractive multicell with a large anvil to the north, and the 'Mercer' cell was now pretty dark with some static crash activity on the AM radio.
Got home, a nice 300km drive... about to go check on the progress of both cells from a hill top.
[edit - the Mercer cell looks quite big on the 6pm radar image... maybe I should have hung around longer?]

Plenty of Thunderstorm activity around Waikato and Auckland this afternoon/ Evening.

Photo below shows Hail falling over 1cm in size.

a really good day!!
graeme, you ended up where we did, we were SE of manatangi and intercepted that first CB, some nice and close lightning strikes
then we drove into large hail
to see the movie of that hail falling:
http://www.weather-display.com/download ... aikato.mpg
3mg size
turn the sound up (to hear it hitting the roof of the car!)
attached photo is just after the hail shower that is in the movie, at Taupiri.
then we got another good CB near te awamutu, more hail, splat type (a bit slushy), and lots of it...was piling up on the side of the road, and good ligthning at times too. Then back north of hamilton, watched a clean rain free base updraft area support a small wall cloud lowering below it
then back over to the hauraki plains to watch a great sunset and ligthtning display on the kaimais, then finally home 10:15pm!!

I measured those hail stones up to 18mm Brian, although most of it around 1cm
Yes, some good lightning about today. Best show for me was this evening over Waiheke Island as seen from Maraetai. Waiheke took a real pasting! Quite a spectacular and frequent display for about 30mins. Got quite a few lightning photos.
