Smoky sky

Theres a definite smoky haze high up now that the nimbostratus has cleared. The sunlight hitting the ground has that particular yellowy-orange hue that you get when it is shining through smoke.

I can't see any smoke on satellite pics of Aus. Have the wind currents been right to bring it over Otago? Seems to be a very thick haze up there in the upper levels.

I was wondering about that - the sun coming in the kitchen window onto the bench was the strangest colour. :o

Sure is smoke there.. is even being pushed down to 50°S by the northerly jetstream southwest of Stewart Is.

Tasmania there experiencing bushfires and low level snow on the same day!

This sky has taken on that pinkish hue again.
There is so much smoke in the atmosphere that the hills on the opposite side of the harbour cannot be clearly seen.

I wonder if the smoke in the atmosphere has any effect of reducing temperatures, like volcanic dust from major eruptions does. :?: (though presumably not nearly as much - it didn't stop Canterbury from reaching 30C today)

I am assuming that what we are seeing more high level smoke in the atmosphere again today ??

What an incredible pattern those clouds make Spike

I think it is more smoke Janos, was a very thick haze from about 5pm and that peculiar colour again. Right now I can see lines of crimson around the setting sun. When the sun was higher there were also distinct patches of blue haze that formed around the fringes of high cloud masses.

I took this photo at 9:20, you can just make out the crimson lines that have distinctly smokey properties. The sunset is spreading rapidly and is very orange.
