Noticed that, but it doesn't at all sound accurate.. 31.6mm so far today at Rotorua Ap...

5.8mm since 9am here, rather constant and coarse.

Wednesday morning look like our best chance at thunder. :)

it did seem to be alot recorded , thats for sure!

the airport is on the other side of the lake though, and more in the lee of the mamaku ranges, i.e would get less rain from a NNW rain event?

There were police reports of flooding up to waist deep in the Pukehangi area, Old Taupo rd, so could well be around that amount..

The air has been unstable to about 5000m in the north over the last couple of days. Localised forcing could quite easily lead to a localised heavy rainfall event. 20mm in 1 hr quite possible.

Well heck then!

Highly unstable air over our waters this morning to the NNW.. CAPE to 1500j/Kg just 8 degrees away from Cape Reinga, wish it would reach further!! Dewpoints should be rising to 20°C shortly up in the far north, so no doubt some heavy downpours or thunderstorms due there today.

Looks like another day of rain on the way this way. :)

The 00z Norfolk Island sounding will be interesting..

the mamaku ranges must make a great gradual up slope orographic rain event from rain coming down from the NNW...which this was ;)
(with local wind flow in from the NE too, even more moisture in from the NE)

this low from the north is goin to colide with the front coming up from the south...will be interesting...eastern NI will get an old man southerly as they say

met service have thunderstorms and heavy rain events on the cards for the upper NI today and 2 nite :)
http://www.metservice.co.nz/default/ind ... ormoutlook

good for the farmers, the upper NI has started to dry out alot now!

Girl swept away in Rotorua flash flood

...The deluge hit Rotorua about 3.30pm and lasted up to two hours.

MetService said nearly 30mm of rain was recorded at the airport between 3pm and 5pm, though much of it could have fallen in a very short period.

Flooded downtown shops had to move stock but the worst-hit area was Rotorua's western suburbs, about five kilometres out of thetown.

The Fire Service's northern communications centre shift manager, Jaron Phillips, said a family were rescued from their car after being stranded in waist-deep water near Pukehangi when a nearby river burst its banks.

Up to 10 homes were inundated. Firefighters went door to door rescuing people. "It was very sudden. It was a very intense downpour," Mr Phillips said...

over all a bit of a non event
this second rain band, the best of it is going down the east of the NI....so the 1st and 2nd rain bands have missed the upper NI mainly...
the best rain totals came when it was not forecast....yesterday...

only 4mm here , so far, despite trying to rain all day
.....we will get a bit of this next rain band, but its moving pretty fast, so wont last long
