Wet and wintry week likely

Unread post by tich »

Looks like some interesting weather coming this week. Tomorrow could see snow showers to about 600 metres in the far south, but Chch is expected to be mainly fine, though in a 'critical' southwesterly flow. A depression could bring some heavy to to the north and east of the North Island about Wednesday, and behind this low, a cold southerly should spread over NZ. The latest ECMWF has the flow coming right up from near Antarctica - pretty wintry for late November.

we have just had the same Cold Front go through for the 2nd time in 12 hours!
its ground hog day!
an exact repeat of the same windspeed/ then cahnge to a SWer and temperature drop as 12 hours ago!
(i.e the front moved back onto us overnight, then back over us again this morning, bringing us welcome 24mm of rain overnight)

Quite cool in Invercargill this morning . Was 7 degrees at 0830 with a 20 kt SW. Been having showers of small hail this morning. Brrrr! Yesterday prior to the front beautiful day but it blew westerly 30 kts + most of the afternoon.

The freezing level down in Invercargill today was around the 800m, so no wonder it was feeling chilly. And the hail would have been coming out of very low topped cb's. Sounding is very stable above 2300m.

Cool in Auckland this evening with a post frontal southwester coming in this afternoon. But the low in the tasman will push the milder humid air back onto us tomorrow.

I expect a few thunderstorms with decent hail over central/eastern North Island Thursday or friday.

Cloudy coolish day here in ChCh although the sun must off popped out when I was at work as my max thermometer got up to 17C in the screen.
It was mainly around the 13/14C mark this afternoon with a cool southerly breeze.
Supposed to clear tomorrow but I think an ENE breeze will keep it cool like it did yesterday.
ECMWF looks good for the rest of the week with this SW flow continuing.
Depending on timing/heat from the sun/'rodents' if anything will happen !!

I expect a few thunderstorms with decent hail over central/eastern North Island Thursday or friday.
Yes that does look likely , at the moment, Steven

Looks like Thursday still offers the best prospects for some interesting weather with Thunderstorms/hail possible over central parts of the North Island. Hopefully skies don't end up too cloudy and thermal heating prevented. If conditions still look favourable Thursday morning I'll hit the road.

Persistent drizzly rain in AK this evening.

Well Australia's sending us their Rugby ball(the low in the tasman looks like a rugby ball) ;) Theyre getting the try and converting it on us :)

And not much defence from the weak ridge of high pressure over central NZ at present. But I think there'll be more red and orange, than green and gold on North Island rain radar screens tomorrow (though green down here in Canty, with the drizzle predicted). Then the cold southerly looks like following on Thursday - if the cold southerly air hits the low before it moves off to the east, things could get interesting, especially in the east of the North Island.

Afternoon Convection Auckland

Unread post by spwill »

The Front cleared Auckland late morning and left very warm and muggy Weather in its wake. This has lead to Convection showers around Auckland this afternoon and now at 3pm there are some very nice looking Cb clouds around.,may be a Storm on the way.

After the clearance of morning rain, localised thunderstorms started developing over North Auckland about 1pm. See picture below.
Quite an active storm developed right over the Auckland Isthmus from about 3.00pm. I observed the activity from my work at the Eastern Suburbs and saw quite a bit of lightning. The static on the am band was every 2-3 seconds from this storm. It drifted southward clearing Ak by 5pm. :)

cb with very occasional lightning out to east of Auckland this evening.
Storm is over the Hunua region. 8.45pm.

Extent of thundery activity tomorrow will depend on timing of SW change and amount of surface heating. But looks very favourable for more storms tomorrow over Auckland/Waikato.

Yesterday afternoon's thunderstorms dumped 55mm in one hour at Hamilton between 5pm and 6pm. And the city recieved 111mm in the 24hrs to 6pm.

Auckland recorded 32mm to 6pm. I'm sure parts of Auckland would have recorded more than this.

The rain (light rain) has arrived in Chch this morning, but no gales, just a moderate southerly.
