Change
today brought a change in the weather not seen in most parts of Canterbury for the last 2 months.
To 7pm, I recorded 20.2mm, most seen for ages.
I hear there were some thunderstorms over central regions of the North Island today. anyone have anything further on this?

There was this site listed today on another topic it has good pictures of it on here http://www.metvuw.com/cgi-bin/mcgregor/ ... -small.cgi
Its about time We get all the rain up here and all the time on the radio they sound so pleased to mention a day without rain or especially without cloudy also mentioned.
It was warmer today than it has been in the last 2 weeks as we had a N-NW wind today and the rain actually eased off with little wind -the NE here can blow here but its tamer than the SW that screams here even when theres "1 isobar" over the top of NZ

Sunday,
Will see a few thundery cb's pop up this afternoon, mainly over the
central North island. With the lifted index over Auckland at -1.6, would not suprise me to see some strong convection further north too.
Micheal, you constantly make mention of wind in Auckland. What part
of the region do you live in. Some parts of Auckland do get blasted by wind. There seems to be a wind corridor through Manukau to East Tamiki on southerwesterlies. And the north shore suburbs such as Browns Bay get absolutely hammered on an E/NE. But generally speaking, Auckland does not experience alot of wind by NZ standards. One aspect I enjoy
about Aucklands weather is the lack of days where the wind exceeds 20knots. Not often. I live in Grey Lynn.
Cheers

I'm in Manurewa The SW howl here as soon as the dreaded wind direction is mentioned let alone the showers that go with it.We don't really get NW here and sometimes the NE can be strong but not too often like the SW and the persistance -I reckon Chch has a nice climate due to the "lack of wind" days when I've been there a long time ago -experiancing the lack of wind days-the overcast high cloud still days.the damp drizzly southerlies but never experienced their NWer:(
I say the nearest to it is on a hot NWer day in Napier-which are very pleasant compared to a typical Auckland day of 3 seasons in 1 day(excepting summer) (which I presume is similar).

ah, manuwera
you get the SW straight off the manukau harbour
all that stops it, is the narrow manuaku peninsular, and then its the tasman sea and beyond
you should see how strong the SW is on this coast line at times.
it has to reach 80 knots (150km/h) on the hill tops before its considered a windy day, LOL

Good Cb development...
...over the last three days, but no audible thunder. A very sticky airstream over the Bay at present, with high daily humidities, and not enough wind to stir the air around! We got a few showers overnight on the 28th/29th, with a total of only 5.9mm, and nothing since. Skies here at 1800 were mostly Cu, with some Ac and As, 5 oktas. It'll be interesting to watch the wee low which seems to be forming on the back of the frontal system out to the east of us. Not too much bother with drought here for a change - we got just enough rain early in the month to green things up. Now we just need warm and dry conditions for the next fortnight to ensure a great vintage...!

I was sent a lightning strike map from Bob Mcdavitt
there was about 15 or so strikes recorded around the wellsford to brynderwyn area and east of that line

Today, well to 9am this morning, 15mm fell here which makes yesterday the wettest day of the year so far here. Not bad for March which looks to be a dry month. Tomorrow's SW change should bring enough rain to bring March up to average rainfall and if the NE hangs in, some violent thunder activity to Christchurch?!?!?
are you ready Aaron!

Just press the Img button at the top of the message box which will insert a tag and then enter the url of the image. Click on the Img button again which will close the tag.
Should look something ike this: [ img ] http://www.site.com/pic1.jpg [ / img ]
I've put some spaces in the tags I've just typed to prevent them being parsed.

The automatic logger in dosen't work, i have to put my details in all the time to reply to this.
anyway, the last posts have nothing to do with my topic of discussion -
"Change".
All I have had is Auckland weather which should lodged in the Auckland weather posting by Michael on the 27th March.

Thunderstorms Cambridge
3mm on Saturday from a spectular CB, no thunder or lighting, but made sunset awesome as the setting sun illuminated it.
On Sunday at 1630 one CB rolled in from the East, covered the sky above so could not define height or buildup, 14mm in little over 30minutes, one lighting strike 5 secs away. ( Whats that 5nm in distance off teh top of my head). . Disrupted the lawns, Wind changed from easerly to westerly but max gust only 5kts..

I recorded 47.7mm over the last 4 days of March after hardly anything for the rest of the month except for the first day of March.
I'm not sure of rainfall totals in other areas of Canterbury but despite the dry period for most of the month, the rainfall over the last few days must of brought Canterbury's rain total up to average.

The rain seems to have lingered longer in North Canterbury this afternoon after clearing Christchurch (but only just) - it must've been a very wet day in Waipara and Amberley. TV1 Weather showed fresh snow on the alps and mentioned snow falling as low as Arthur's Pass Village. Winter is certainly getting closer. (don't forget there was a much more ferocious wintry southerly blast on April 1 last year)
