I just checked Sky Digital's Interactive Weather Channel and it says we are currently 30C here in Dunedin.

I've got 25.6C with a max of 26.6C so far today. Splashes of high cloud and the winds could be described as "breezy" from the Southeast.

Fine and mild here in Chch - a fresh northeasterly is cooling things down a bit, but not too much. I guess we'll be getting the driest December on record in the city, having missed out on recent scattered thunderstorms around Cantebury.
Happy New years

Happy New Year

Back from camping on the sun drenched Coromandal Peninsula (rain drenched for one day).

Should see some hot temperatures in inland areas today, particularly over the South Island.

What a good prediction that turned out to be. Got up to about 31C in Chch yesterday, but it was hot for only a short time - the northeasterly kept it down to the lower/mid 20s for most of the day. But inland, I've heard that readings got into the high 30s, and Darfield got to 40C! Was that an official reading or just someone's backyard thermomter? I think the only time before when temps in NZ have reached 40 or more was in the great heatwave on Feb 1973.

This is out of the ODT paper this morning

Darfield 40
Hororata 36
Tara hills 32
Dunedin 27
Alexandra 33

It was hot here in Alexandra yesterday with two days in a row with temps over 33.

Looks to be a little cooler today with alot more cloud around, still forcasted to reach 30, temp ATM is 25.

Also last year rainfall was only 227mm (average 330-340mm).
The lowest being 211mm from 1922- 1980.

I am not completly sure but this might be the lowest 12 month dry spell since 1967 with was 167mm.

Can anyone help me out on any more info regarding dry spells for Alexandra and any where else in N.Z

Cheers

Andy :)

According to TV1 weather last night the highest offical temperature was 38C....forgot where that was...in Canterbury somewhere.

High temperatures again today, away from the coast, over both islands.

Sheltered Auckland suburbs such as Henderson should get to 30C this afternoon.

As of today none of the on-line stations in the National Climate Database in Canty got above 36deg on Thursday, (several got to 36). I will check again tomorrow. The Press newspaper has had several reports from farmers saying their home weather stations got above 40deg, but full sun no wind conditions are the worst case scenario for generating radiation errors in poorly exposed temperature sensors so I wouldnt put much store by them.

Looks like very similar temperatures again today, Darfield was a degree hotter at 37 at 1pm, Chch briefly to 31 before the cool easterly arrived. However, it looks as though the area with 30s has spread to include much of Marlborough, inland Nelson, and some parts of Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay today.

Similar days seem likely tomorrow and Sunday :( Too hot to do anything.

Looking at the upper air soundings today I think 30C will be fairly widespread inland Saturday. 850hpa temps are quite high.

Quite a temperature variation (maximums 24-30C) across Auckland today due to the light winds (coastal vs inland suburbs). Grey Lynn recorded 27C. :)

We got only 21 in Invercargill today coupled with a southerly change at 3pm that brought drizzle with an embedded heavy shower at 6.15 pm that gave us 4mm in about 15 minutes. Now cloudy with a light NE and 16 degrees.

Highest temperature on Thursday would appear to be Woodbury with 37. So far the highest for Friday seems to be Darfield with 37, but I will confirm tomorrow when more data has been filed.

Good day to sit inside to watch the cricket.

11.40am and my station has reached 29.4C with only 30% humidity.

I think I'll mow the lawns tonight about 8pm ;)

Another hot day in Canterbury
As I drove back from Blenheim today the temperature soared as I crossed the Hundalees into North Canterbury,Cheviot was on 33 at midday, cooler along the coast towards Chch, but at the airport the temp was 31 degrees.
Stepped out of my car in Ashburton and my gauge which is located on the cool shady side of my house read 34 degrees.

Cheers.
