The 3PM obs show some Auckland stations sharing similar temperatures (about 14C) to Waiouru! So the cold day temps must be quite localised, even though the airmass over NZ is still becoming cool anyway. MetService predicted freezing level for NI mountains is expected to lower to about 2400 metres overnight - hardly a wintry outbreak.

Chilly this morning in the central NI - 7.7C in Waiouru and 10C in Taupo at 10AM. Taupo webcam about 9AM shows low cloud and rain over the lake area, so likely to be snowing on the higher levels of Ruapehu - freezing level probably lower than the 2300 metres that MetService forecast. The kind of situation (low to east of NI, with cold unstable southerly/southwesterly flow over the island) that, if it occurred in winter, would see the Desert Rd closed by a heavy snow dump.

Try telling people in Taupo that it's summer. Only 9.7C at 1PM! The latest webcam shows a partial clearance but still only 10C. Could easily be their coldest December day on record. From the Taupo webcam, you still can't properly see the mountains, but I'd say now's the time if you want some summer skiing. (Waiouru was on 7.8C at 1PM) Rotorua has got up to 16C after a semi-clearance from wet weather and temperatures not much warmer than Taupo's, according to it's online station.

Check out the webcam now - a good coating on Ruapehu and Ngaruahoe. Probably won't last for long. From the Taupo webcam, you still can't properly see the mountains, but I'd say now's the time if you want some summer skiing.

Thanks Jeff. I've already seen another Ruapehu webcam (via the piperpat webcam links page), but that one hadn't been updated since the 96 eruption! Must've been a good dump of snow on both Ruapehu and Ngaruahoe, as it's still there this afternoon. Looking at webcam, I'd guess the snow level got down to about 1900 metres (a little bit on the highest peak of Mt Tongariro this morning), but snow probably fell to lower levels yesterday (forecast freezing level yesterday at 1800 metres), though warm ground might've prevented settling.Have a look at http://www.geonet.org.nz/volcanocam.htm for a bit clearer view, little winder it was not very summery there yesterday!
