Banks Peninsula is more exposed to situations like what's forecast for tomorrow. The plains often tend to miss out on such southwesterly events.Great explanation Tony,it is really hard to know what may happen until the actual time.
I think there is a better chance of perhaps some hail and sleet showers On Friday morning, but if there is snow let there be .

Looks like Queenstown (webcam) has had as much snow as Auckland.
An excellent webcam http://www.skyline.co.nz/queenstown/webcam/

Latest LAPs modeling is interesting, puts a wave over Otago around midday tomorrow with very cold air - certainly the potential there for some heavy snow to low levels, and possibly some more of that thunder. But the wave is moving incredibly quickly, so whatever happens wont last long. I still dont think its going to make a big impact on Canterbury, but we'll see...

Has been rather unfortunate in the way this blast has gone but good news for those down south .
Tomorrow afternoon could see some icy showers with gale SW winds and a dusting to low levels on BP, be great to hear a few claps of thunder here too .
But next week is looking even better with some very substantial falls of snow to low levels, it is once again a wee way out but it is something to look forward to atleast as long as models stay good.
Was rather strange weather today with a mild start and breezy westerly winds before turning SW at about 9am dropping the temperature. Then cloud breifly increased with sunny intervals but changing from warm to cold all the time. Also a fresh NE wind kicked in, as I was expecting the South westerly to stick around for most of the day.
Cheers
Jason.

I've just been out at Taieri Mouth (about 30kms south of Dunedin on the coast) for most of the evening and when I left 45mins ago there was sleet to sea-level amongst quite heavy rain. Not sure if any reached up here at home

Dunedin will get the precip as fronts nove through. One overnight and another tomorrow. Tomorrows front should spread showers into Canterbury as well. I mention that as Met Service forecast is for dry weather there tomorrow.
Interestingly Invercargill/Southland has a critical S'Wester as well. Stewart Island offers almost complete protection from showers when they are coming from that direction.

Boring but interesting weather here today.Manukau heads observer wrote:it was a critical SWer today, and so Canterbury missed out....i.e the flow needs to be more SSW up through the SI and not just over southland (i.e a low moving NE just off Dunedin will be the trick
Nothing much happening. No SW and wind if anything between SouthEast and North, here?
