Low early 2nd week of June

Unread post by NZstorm »

Just start a thread on this. I notice the dewpoints at Norfolk Island are 21C. This will be good fuel for the low as it moves onto northern NZ. Certainly will make the air unstable for a day or two.

Eastern parts of the North Island should finally get something from this - even a MetService low probability of heavy rain. But hopefully not a drought breaker like NSW is getting.
Will the moisture arrives from the north over cold air and give Ruapehu some decent snow for its ski-fields?

These type of shallow lows (ECLs to certain Australians) can be usual to affect mainly the North Island when they move over. You get nothing much down here, just more boring weather [-(

Rain starting here now, 6:40am, and its cold...9.7°C, easterly wind...just as I predicted....its going to be a cold raw day for Auckland today!
(but once we get into the warm sector its going to suddenly warm up!)

And for much of NZ too! Single figure temps for many places south of BOP/Waikato at noon and 3pm; Waiouru on only 2C at 3pm, with 2mm in previous hour. (snow on Desert Road likely)

Only got up to about 8C in Chch today; not much below normal, but alot lower what we've getting lately.

Certainly is cold out currently sitting on about 5C atleast with some very brief light showers off and on for much of the afternoon.
I would be keeping an eye on this Low North Islanders as it has some interesting potential going by what it has deliverd to much of NSW, Queensland coast.
Cheers
Jason.

we only got to 12.2°C here today (i.e now, at 7pm, LOL)
Winter sure started with a jolt in June alright.
Seems there the temperature change across the fronts associated with the tasman low are ony gradual, i.e no real defined frontal boundary, and hence not alot of rain .....the potential you would think was there with this cold air here and the subtropical air mass that is there north of the NI...but the two airmasses have not been rubbing shoulders much and instead are just sliding past each other

Should get a warmer night, currently 13C.

Some Cb clouds developing out in the Tasman, might catch a heavy shower here overnight.

Went over to Napier on Friday evening, sky clearing and a lovely drive over with a westerly tail wind. Sat dawned bright and clear but still a modest westerly breeze. Lovely day though :) Rain started today over there at about 10:30 am, just light rain but the temperature had dropped dramatically down to single figures. And wind had changed direction. Still very barren over there in HB. :( Grass will not grow below 10degC...

Sat pm dropped to 3.2deg back home in Tokoroa at midnight after the wind change to ESE at 20:00. Continued home today with light rain this evening after a high of 8.5deg and now both temp and baro dropping slowly... no rain last hr.

Yes there was snow falling on Desert Rd this afternoon -comment from traveller through Wairakei

From TV1 tonight, some chilly maximums today - only 6C in Hastings. Must be a big shock for them as they've above 20C many times in the last month.

Yes the shopkeepers in town had been enjoying the extra custom from the long Indian Summer... but all too aware of the "stock farmers" and their plight for lack of food supply. Consequently stock levels are being reduced for those worst hit. Hay is being collected and transported from Waikato and Taranaki, donated free, but HB farmers were paying for transport I believe.

The Cb's seem to miss Auckland on a NW flow! Interesting pics Brian.

Temperature 15C in Auckland this morn. Compare that to Dunedin Airport -6C and Christchurch -4C.
