High altitude rainbow effect

Unread post by RODALCO »

This afternoon looking West between 1600 and 1630 hrs this partial rainbow was visible on the west side of the sun.
Although no obvious rain was visible and the sky was clear, the colour spectrum was quite noticeable.
Photo taken from Wattle Road, Sunnyvale.

Well spotted Radalco. Its likely a 'sun dog' or its scientific name is Parhelion. Same family as the Halo. Something to do with the refraction of light through ice crystals (cirrus). :)
