Thats good to hear it's firing up down there again, you might not be able to find your snowman Phil  .
I have noticed here in the last hour or so that wind has turned a more southerly quarter but definatly S-SW, I am not sure how much of an effect that will have for us.
I noticed a CB off the coast to the NE this afternoon which was most likly throwing out the visable strikes on the tracker.
How does the snow dance go again? maybe you guys down south know the secret as it seemed to work for you guys  ;) .
Cheers
Jason.

I see on CRT there isnt any warnings out on the map, but over on fencepost its covered in warnings!

Im doubting snow will be falling to 200m, the cold 850mb air isnt arriving till mid monday, and 500mb is only sitting around -22c. Another factor is its coming from the SW and in my opinon Sw events doesnt seem to effect the plains nearly as much as a SE. B'sP will get a good dusting.

Yes definite Southerly More so now then yesterday, at the moment its clear sunny skies and hardly any wind! and i can feel frosts coming on tonight.
However apparently there might be a few showers on the east coast tonight with snow too 300m.
Just another wait and see game tonight, sure is cold with tomorrow night/Monday being the focus for Canterbury witch i still believe something will happen, positiveness is the key!

I would guess that more snow has fallen in and around Dunedin than up Central. This is a big one !!

Nelson and Canterbury
Fine, apart from scattered showers in Nelson today and a few about Banks Peninsula, with snow to 500 metres there.
Metservice seem abit more realistic with there sunday snow forecast.

You must be caching an old image - the map definitely has snow symbols on it.

I tend to agree - thats why in our forecast for Monday we're predicting a clearance inland, and only brief light snow showers near the coast. The air is just too dry to produce anything substantial.

Why is that forecast "more realistic" when there dont appear to be any showers near Banks Peninsula today?

A blustery southwesterly change after dark on Sunday, and more widespread snow showers may develop to 200m on Sunday night
The forecast doesnt read that!

I dont see the problem - you're reading into the words a meaning which is not there. The word "may" is there for a reason, as is the word "showers". The forecast for Monday indicates a clearance inland, and further showers near the coast. Thats how it looked based on this morning's data, and has for several days. It may change when we update it soon based on the 0Z run.

Edit - I just checked the 0Z data, and I think we'll scrub the Sunday night change, but stick with the forecast for Monday.

Edit2 - 5.22pm, web site forecasts now updated

Went up to Victoria Park this afternoon - looks pretty clear towards west, eg Mt Hutt, but more cloud spreading east in North Canterbury mountains. Afternoon sunlight prevented me seeing how much or how low the snow is.

that front that gave snow to the SI west coast could give snow to Taihape, or at least hills higher, and more so the central NI mountains, as it goes through in the next hour or so ?

Max was more than 13C and a min of 12C on the shortest day, most people would be very happy with that.
Snow in Dunedin is great because it usually means thunder in Auckland :D

Interesting to see the snow in Reefton on TV1 news. The elevation is 200m so perhaps not that an extreme event.
An interesting polar event considering how widespread the snow has been and thunderstorms in the west of the North Island as well.

Satellite shows the air rapidly stabilising in the southern oceans.
So Im guessing that means fine mild weather :( ?

This thread is huge!

Some stronger gusts coming through tonight.. gusts to 37 knots.
So Im guessing that means fine mild weather ?
For Chch.. looks like warmer northwesterlies will develop briefly after a very frosty start tomorrow.. i'd be tipping -4°C.

Otago's on a roll!!! Great pics. :)

wow, 37kts is a great speed for inland there in Hamilton...looks like you got that in a good squall as that front (whats left of it this far north) passed through Foggy?
Check out the exposed west coast here:
http://www.weather-display.com/windy/otherdat.htm
averaging 35kts (full on gale) all day long 8)

You just have to go look through the archives on the index page, Mikey....

Starting to look somewhat promising for some of the white stuff here in CHCH for tomorrow (not as much as down south, for sure) We may see some, but I doubt it will accumulate to much at all...could be pretty to watch!

Strong gusts overnight has meant a very rapid thaw. Currently sitting on 6.6deg but the wind will be the main player today for sure.
