NE at 5.6km/hr, 10.1ºC, barometer started falling sharply and wind is picking up. Temp still rising, 4.5ºC in last hour. Still fine and mild but high cloud here.

Yes a dull day in Christchurch today, persistent rain should get abit heavier tonight with NE picking up a little.Karshvardidgâh wrote:Still steady rain here in CHCH
Should be nice too go too bed and hear the rain on the roof not too cold out there i reckon, probably around 9C

Latest radar shows the rain band over us moving southeastwards - rain should be starting to ease in Chch as the blue area seems to be departing.Yes a dull day in Christchurch today, persistent rain should get abit heavier tonight with NE picking up a little.

If it's not snowing, there must be freezing rain in the Mackenzie Basin and Central Otago, as the noon obs shows near freezing temperatures and recent precipitation.

It's been raining here in the Mackenzie since the early hours, but freezing stopped long ago. The roads were a skating rink until maybe 10 am but the warmish rain and higher temps thawed it to slush. Still lightly raining here off-and-on but not really cold.tich wrote:If it's not snowing, there must be freezing rain in the Mackenzie Basin and Central Otago, as the noon obs shows near freezing temperatures and recent precipitation.

It's not as such the NE flow picking up but the warm and cold front crossing this evening when the rain will likly get heavier.tornadoman18 wrote:Yes a dull day in Christchurch today, persistent rain should get abit heavier tonight with NE picking up a little.Karshvardidgâh wrote:Still steady rain here in CHCH

I am quite surprised at the surface and paddock flooding already and there has only been about 10mm so far if that, must be because we havn't had any proper rain in awhile therefore the grounds are dry and don't soak it up as easy.
Even after this low passes there is still some more interesting looking weather for sure , and maybe some better shots for advective snow mid or end of next week.
Cheers
Jason.

Not looking great for the skifields again. I've been told that much of the snow they've been frantically making at Round Hill and Ohau has been washed away. Days and days, even weeks, of effort damn near all for nothing after one day of rain.Andy wrote:Temp 0.5°c and 7mm of rain
Still raining and icey
Cornet Peak lower base buildings 1100m temp 2.9° and raining 9mm

I think much of the lower South Island got a light dusting late last night or early this morning, but most areas seem to have experienced a temperature increase and rainfall. Is it raining and warmish in Dunedin now, or is it cold and dry?Janos wrote:Noticed a light fall of snow on the Dunedin hills this morning.

It's been hovering around 0-2 °C around here all day. I guess it's quite warmish right up to that 2,500m freezing level, allowing the moisture to stay (or become) liquid.tornadoman18 wrote:question: how can it not snow but just rain when its only a temp of 0C??
I dont get that.
I'm sure TonyT or RWood knows the answer.

I was actually referring as of up to midday of that rainfall total when the rain was lighter this morning and when the paddocks were puddling up.tornadoman18 wrote:yeh i was a little surprised jase that u mentioned it had only been around 10mm theres been alot more here id say around 25mm with more too come ayeTonyT wrote: 30mm here so far, and still raining.
This afternoon it has become more persistant and is now getting close to heavy.
Cheers

Yeah, Jason, I agree with you...I don't have a rain gauge (sinner! repent!) but the rain has indeed gotten heavier even in the past hour...coincides with what the models have been showing all along...Jasestrm wrote:I was actually referring as of up to midday of that rainfall total when the rain was lighter this morning and when the paddocks were puddling up.tornadoman18 wrote: yeh i was a little surprised jase that u mentioned it had only been around 10mm theres been alot more here id say around 25mm with more too come aye

(aside) The ski field opererators must be hacked off with all the "warm" weather and rain basically erasing the past week or so of snow making efforts....
