The sky tower was struck by lightning, not an unusual target for lightning though. :)

Great Pic's !

Wasn't that a ripper.

The rain and hail were torrential here (it stopped traffic), and it was like night.

I wish I could put more coins in the slot and order a double dose of lightning with a huge portion of thunda, on the side.

The line came through at the right time of day for thunder (for a change).

There are some pretty good 1st-hand accounts here:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/4117466a10.html

...one of them mentioned not seeing the "classic funnel" associated with a tornado, but is that not a misconception? Can't you have a tornado without seeing the funnel?

...or perhaps this was a "gustnado" with the fast moving front?

...pass, all up for discussion...still sounds like a doozy, though!!!! ;) :D

Wow a tornado at Botany!

It must have been the 50 cent coin I threw to the wind because another CB has just fired up here again.

I heard a report of a column of water moving of the sea onto downtown NewPlymouth, Waterspout.

I see there's quite a few Lightning strikes in the Firth of Thames area and still some just to the north of Auckland ( Cb Brian can see from his place)

Because New Plymouth is my home town, I can notice something really ironic with this picture.

If you look to the right, you can see the "wind wand" bending very sharply.

Fantastic pics!

I watched both TV3 and TV1's news reports. Why do they refer to any tornado that hits NZ as a "mini tornado"?

This really gets my gander up - grrrr!

There is NO such thing, according to Wkipaedia (probably the most reliable reference source on the web) and check out dictionary.com.
again - no such word.

Can anyone enlighten me?

I emailed TVNZ to bitch about it last year and they said the fire service had told them it was a mini-tornado at that particular event they reported. The reporter said she wouldn't use the term again, but there are quite a few reporters to get around!

Cheers,

G

The term is also used in Austraia and the UK. I believe it originated from the UK where they get a lot of F0-F1 tornadoes.

3 in 1 day, all in major urban areas - wonder if others have occurred in rural parts and maybe gone unnoticed. I've read somewhere in a NZ weather book that many NZ tornadoes go unreported, occurring in remote areas.

I see in the TV1 News footage of the New Plymouth one that it started as a waterspout before hitting land. The path shown had it crossing a small lake - turning into a waterspout again?

I did notice some ominous cloud formations from the first CB line crossing in the Karaka area, around 1:30pm....and said to the wife, this is tornado weather (before any had been reported or before I knew of any reports : ) )

i am not surprised about Tauranga getting action.....looked very impressive the CB as it headed that way

some good flahses of lighting now out to my WSW :)
